Assembly at Pindarak Lake in Visnagar, Hostile Attackers Foiled, and Shreehari’s Divine Illusion
In the historic northern Gujarat town of Visnagar lies an ancient sacred lake known as ‘Pindarak’. According to historical traditions, during their twelve-year exile, the Pandavas of Mahabharata visited this spot and performed obsequies (pinda-dana) for their ancestors, sanctifying the waters for eternity.
On one occasion, Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj arrived in Visnagar during His spiritual travels across North Gujarat, accompanied by a retinue of holy sadhus, dedicated householders, and trusted armed guards (parshads). To further sanctify the ancient tirtha, Shreehari bathed in the lake alongside the assembly, watered the horses, and seated Himself beneath the expansive shade of dense banyan and neem trees on the lake’s bank. Seated in an orderly assembly, the devotees were drinking in the nectar of Maharaj’s supreme spiritual discourses.
At that moment, a gang of ten to twelve ill-intentioned men driven by intense sectarian malice toward the Swaminarayan faith marched aggressively toward the lake, brandishing thick wooden staves and shouting hostile war cries! They believed they had found an unguarded opportunity to attack and eliminate the Lord out in the open.
As they drew near, watchful bodyguards Parshad Bhaguji, Miyaji, and Ratanji perceived their violent intentions and instantly sprang into action, drawing their swords and spears to defend their Master. However, omnipotent Shreehari raised His right hand, gesturing for His guards to remain calm: “Bhaguji! Allow them to approach; we need not lift a finger against anyone!”
The instant the mob closed in with raised sticks, Shreeji Maharaj cast a piercing glance of divine power (aishwarya) upon them! That single glance instantly confounded their perception and clouded their vision. The assembly before them vanished from their eyes, and they perceived Shreehari standing far away beneath a solitary mango tree! Roaring in fury, the mob rushed toward the mango tree, swinging their heavy clubs violently into empty air! Suddenly, one of them shouted: “You fools! Swaminarayan is not here; look, He is standing beneath that distant peepal tree!” The entire mob pivoted and sprinted frantically toward the peepal tree, thrashing at the wind and dust! Then, a mirage of the Lord appeared under yet a third tree!
For half an hour, Shreehari made the bewildered attackers sprint in circles from tree to tree under the hot sun until they collapsed to the ground, utterly exhausted, drenched in sweat, and gasping for breath! All the while, Shreehari remained peacefully seated on His wooden dais, while the parshads and devotees were doubled over in laughter at the comical spectacle!
Utterly defeated and humbled, the assailants realized their folly and recognized the astonishing divine power of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Dropping their weapons, they crawled contritely to the edge of the assembly, fell prostrate in the dust at Shreehari’s lotus feet, and begged for mercy: “O Supreme Lord! Blinded by ignorance, we came to harm You, yet You spared our lives through this divine lesson; please forgive our terrible transgression!”
The compassionate Lord forgave them and admonished them to lead moral, peaceful lives. Concluding the assembly, Shreehari mounted Manki and, yielding to the loving insistence of Keshavray Suba (the provincial governor), graced his residence with the entire company.
