Testing by Hostile Bhats in Vijapur, Demand for a Gate-Turning Miracle, and Shreehari’s Prophetic Rebuttal
In Samvat 1868, Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj was gracing the towns and hamlets of the Dandhavya region accompanied by His devoted sadhus and parshads. Touring from Prantij, Maharaj arrived in Vijapur. Leading devotee Pragjibhai Sathwara and the joyous townspeople accorded Him a celebratory reception with musical instruments, hosting Him at the Barot’s civic hall (choro), where Shreehari seated Himself upon a decorated cot. Devout disciple Vajiba welcomed the Lord with sanctified vermilion and rice grains, while the assembly performed ceremonial worship.
At noon, Vajiba prepared a lavish feast of traditional delicacies at her home, seating Shreehari upon a low stool and serving Him with deep affection. After refreshing His mouth, Shreehari personally served food five times with His own holy hands to the unending rows of sadhus, ensuring every soul was thoroughly satisfied.
At that time, several families of the local bard (Bhat) community who harbored deep-seated prejudice and hostility toward the Swaminarayan movement arrived at the lodging. Strutting forward haughtily, one of them questioned: “Are You genuinely God?” Shreehari smiled serenely and answered with effortless ease: “Yes indeed, brother; We are truly the Supreme Godhead!”
The arrogant Bhat sneered cynically: “If You are truly God, prove it through an undeniable miracle! Lord Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan and slew ferocious demons like Putana, Bakasura, and Dhenukasura; Lord Rama bridged the roaring ocean—scriptures are replete with such supernatural feats! Show us a tangible miracle right now, and only then shall we believe!” Shreeji Maharaj replied calmly: “We shall grant whatever miracle you desire; state your demand!”
The haughty challenger posed an absurd, impossible condition: “If You possess divine power, take this eastern-facing town gate of Vijapur and turn it around this instant so that it faces west!” Shreeji Maharaj burst into hearty laughter: “Fetch paper, a pen, and an inkpot! If all the Bhats of your township commit in writing to accept the sacred kanthi and embrace the moral vows of our fellowship for life, We shall turn your gate around immediately!” Caught off guard and humiliated by Maharaj’s decisive reply, the Bhat muttered defensively: “You are merely a magician, and that is why you can pull off such illusions!”
Shreehari rose with grave spiritual dignity and declared: “Behold, brother! If We stooped to performing such cheap mundane spectacles, the world would label Us an ordinary magician rather than the Supreme Lord! We never perform trivial parlor tricks. But mark Our words: the very kind of sensational trick you seek shall be demonstrated to all of you by your very own local rogue ascetic (bawa) exactly ten days from today!” Having uttered this mysterious prophecy, Shreehari accepted the devotion of the faithful disciples and proceeded to the neighboring village of Gerita to grace the home of devotee Motibhai.
Exactly ten days elapsed following Shreehari’s departure from Vijapur. On the tenth night, the deceitful village ascetic (bawa) ensnared the young, unmarried daughter of that very same arrogant Bhat who had demanded the miracle, and eloped with her under cover of darkness! An uproar swept through the township. The townsfolk pointed at the disgraced Bhat, exclaiming: “When you insolently challenged Supreme Lord Swaminarayan for an absurd miracle, He explicitly prophesied that your own village bawa would demonstrate a miracle in ten days! Such is the catastrophic fruit of defying and insulting the Supreme Lord and His holy saints!” The Bhat family was crushed in shame and remorse, while the divine omniscience of Bhagwan Swaminarayan was universally acknowledged across Vijapur.
