Devjibhai Vipra of Velavadar: The Humble Bundle of Carrots on Ekadashi and Shrihari’s Unbounded Grace
In the village of Velavadar lived Devjibhai Vipra, an impoverished yet spiritually elevated devotee of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Though living in extreme material poverty, he constantly chanted the Swaminarayan Mahamantra and joyfully served visiting ascetics by drawing water from wells, fetching buttermilk, and sweeping the village mandir.
Yearning deeply for the divine darshan of Shreeji Maharaj, Devjibhai walked to Gadhpur. After bathing in the holy Ghela River, he hesitated: ‘How can I approach my Supreme Master empty-handed? Yet if I spend two or three paise on sugar or a coconut, how shall I afford food for myself?’ With his sole remaining copper coin, he purchased fresh carrots, tied them into a humble cloth bundle, and carried it upon his shoulder into Dada Khachar’s courtyard.
Knowing his pure heart, the omniscient Shrihari inquired with feigned innocence, “O Devjibhai! What precious offering have you bundled upon your shoulder?” In a state reminiscent of the legendary Sudama, Devjibhai prostrated and replied with moist eyes: “O Lord! Nothing is concealed from You! Today is the holy fast of Ekadashi, so I have brought this humble bundle of carrots for Your sacred fruit fast!” Placing the bundle at Shrihari’s lotus feet, he stood with folded hands.
Deeply moved by the devotee’s guileless love, Shreeji Maharaj immediately summoned Mulji Brahmachari: “Brahmachariji! Take these carrots brought by Devjibhai; prepare a savory spiced curry from half, and pickle the other half for Us! And mark this instruction: for as long as Devjibhai remains in Gadhpur for darshan, feed him two meals daily directly from Our sanctified royal thal!”
Witnessing such unconditional grace and tender affection from the Lord of the universe, tears of supreme gratitude flowed copiously down Devjibhai’s cheeks, immortalizing his simple offering forever.
