Ratanbai’s Devotion at Varjang Jaliya, the Child Brushing the Ant, and the Divine Boon to Sango Babariya

On one occasion, Supreme Lord Shreehari visited the village of Varjang Jaliya in Saurashtra. Drawn by the pure devotional love of an ardent devotee, Ratanbai Babariya, Maharaj entered her courtyard and personally unfolded a cot beneath the shade of a sacred peepal tree to rest.

Upon learning of the Lord’s arrival, village devotees including young Prembai (a girl from the goldsmith community) and Hirabhai Thakkar rushed to the courtyard and bowed at Shreehari’s holy feet. Approaching with folded hands, Ratanbai made a devout prostration and prayed: “O Maharaj! It is warm outside; a comfortable wooden settee (sangamanchi) is laid out on the veranda. Kindly grace us by sitting there!”

Shreeji Maharaj rose and seated Himself upon the sangamanchi. Overwhelmed with ecstatic joy, Ratanbai bustled about the house in great haste to prepare refreshments, accidentally dropping a water pot from her trembling hands. Seeing this, Shreehari chuckled gently: “Ratanbai! Why such immense haste? Do your household tasks calmly and slowly!” Ratanbai replied with pure devotion: “Maharaj! How can I be slow? I fear You will stand up and depart in an instant!” Shreeji Maharaj lovingly reassured her: “We shall not leave; today We have come specifically to stay at your home!”

As Shreeji Maharaj sat upon the veranda with His upper torso uncovered in the summer breeze, a large black ant (mankodo) crawled onto His back. Seeing the insect on the Lord’s divine back, young Prembai naturally stepped forward and brushed it away with her hand.

Witnessing this, Shreehari’s dedicated bodyguard, Parshad Bhaguji, cautioned her sharply: “O girl! Do not touch Maharaj like that; keep your distance!” However, merciful Shreehari smiled warmly and restrained Bhaguji: “Bhaguji, let it be! There is no fault here; Prembai is merely an innocent child, and the touch of a pure-hearted child carries no spiritual blemish!”

Shortly thereafter, having completed her chores, Ratanbai sat reverently before Shreehari. The Lord then imparted sublime spiritual wisdom on detachment and devotion: “This human body is ephemeral, and all material pleasures of this world are transient. One day, this entire cosmos will dissolve in cosmic dissolution. Therefore, even while fulfilling householder duties, maintain constant remembrance of Our divine form; for if Our murti remains enshrined within your heart, all spiritual attainments are accomplished!”

After two hours of uplifting discourses, Shreehari mounted His mare, Manki, to depart. At that precise moment, Ratanbai’s husband, Sango Babariya, returned from his day’s work in the fields. Seeing Lord Shreehari ready to depart, Sango rushed forward, fell prostrate in the dust, and firmly grasped Manki’s reins, pleading: “O Maharaj! Today the golden sun has dawned upon my humble home! Please grace us by staying for two days, nourish us with Your nectar-like discourses, and bestow upon us the bliss of Your divine darshan!”

Pleased by Sango’s genuine devotion, Shreehari said: “Sango Bhagat! We are immensely pleased with your faith. Ask for whatever boon your heart desires!” Sango folded his hands and humbly answered: “O Lord! By Your grace, I possess ample worldly comforts—a house, an upper-story dwelling, and fertile orchards. Yet my lap remains empty; we lack an heir to carry forward the family line.”

The wish-fulfilling Lord smiled benevolently and granted the divine boon: “Go, Sango Bhagat, permit Us to depart now; by the grace of God, you shall be blessed with not one, but two noble sons!” With this blessing, Shreehari rode forward on Manki.

True to the Lord’s prophetic word, one year later a healthy baby boy was born to Sango Babariya, followed by a second son the subsequent year! Filled with boundless joy, Sango exclaimed: “The promise given by my beloved Lord Maharaj has manifested with absolute truth!”

As for the young girl Prembai, when she grew up and married, she settled in Tarkatalav near Amreli. She spent her days spinning cotton yarn on a charkha, weaving thick devotional shawls for the sadhus and earning the profound grace of Sadguru Mahapurushdas Swami.
