કચ્છના વાંઢીયામાં દેવશી લૂહારના ઘેર વણતેડ્યા પધારેલા શ્રીહરિએ તેનો ટાઢો રોટલો આરોગ્યો; સાધુ-અભ્યાગતો માટે રોજ કાવડ ઉપાડતાં લોહીલુહાણ થયેલા તેના ખભાની ભક્તિ જોઈ પ્રભુએ સાક્ષાત્ દર્શન આપ્યાં.
એક વખત શ્રીજીમહારાજ મુળજી બ્રહ્મચારી સાથે કચ્છ દેશમાં વિચરણ કરતાં કરતાં ભચાઉ તાલુકાના વાંઢીયા ગામે પધાર્યા. ગામની બજાર વચ્ચેથી ચાલતાં ચાલતાં અચાનક શ્રીહરિ દેવશી લૂહારની ખડકીમાં દાખલ થયા અને ઓસરીમાં સ્વહસ્તે ખાટલો ઢાળીને બિરાજમાન થયા. દેવશી લૂહારે અજાણ્યા તેજોમય અતિથિને પોતાના આંગણે જોઈ કોઢમાંથી કામ પડતું મૂકી દોટ દીધી અને શીતળ જળનો લોટો ભરી પ્રભુને જળપાન કરાવ્યું.
શ્રીહરિએ કહ્યું, “અમને અતિશય ભૂખ લાગી છે, ઘરમાં જે કંઈ તૈયાર હોય તે તરત જમવા આપો!” દેવશી લૂહારે બે હાથ જોડી નમ્રતાથી કહ્યું, “આપ તો કોઈ દેવપુરુષ જેવા લાગો છો; ઘરમાં અત્યારે માત્ર સવારના ટાઢા રોટલાના ટુકડા પડ્યા છે, તે આપને કેમ ધરાવાય? આપ થોડી વાર વિશ્રામ કરો તો હું શીરા-પૂરી બનાવીને જમાડું!” પરંતુ શ્રીહરિએ આગ્રહ કરી કહ્યું, “અમને અત્યારે ખૂબ ભૂખ લાગી છે, જે ટાઢો ટુકડો હોય તે જ આપો!” લૂહારે રોટલાનો ટુકડો આપ્યો અને શ્રીહરિએ તે પ્રેમપૂર્વક આરોગ્યો. ત્યારબાદ શીરા-પૂરી તૈયાર થતાં મુળજી બ્રહ્મચારીએ થાળ ધરાવી પ્રભુને જમાડ્યા.
ભોજન બાદ મુળજી બ્રહ્મચારીએ આશ્ચર્યથી પૂછ્યું, “હે મહારાજ! આ લૂહારના એવા તે કયા અહોભાગ્ય કે આપે વણતેડ્યે એની ઓસરીએ ખાટલો ઢાળ્યો અને ટાઢા રોટલાનો ટુકડો પણ આરોગ્યો?” શ્રીહરિએ કહ્યું, “બ્રહ્મચારી! આ ભક્તનો ખમીસ હઠાવીને એનો ખભો જુઓ!” બ્રહ્મચારીએ જોયું તો દેવશી લૂહારના ખભાની ચામડી ઘસાઈને લોહીના ચાઠાં પડેલાં હતાં! શ્રીજીમહારાજે રહસ્ય ખોલતાં કહ્યું, “આ ભક્ત રોજ ગામમાંથી કાવડ ફેરવીને રોટલાની ભિક્ષા માંગી સાધુ અને અભ્યાગતોને જમાડે છે. એ કાવડ ઉપાડતાં એનો ખભો છોલાઈ ગયો છે! એની આ નિઃસ્વાર્થ સેવાથી રીઝાઈને જ અમે આજે એના આંગણે પધાર્યા છીએ!” પ્રભુએ દેવશી લૂહારને દિવ્ય દર્શન આપી અક્ષરધામના અધિકારી બનાવ્યા.

वांधिया के देवशी लुहार की ठंडी रोटी और कावड़ सेवा का दिव्य फल
एक बार श्रीजी महाराज मूलजी ब्रह्मचारी के साथ कच्छ देश में विचरण करते हुए भचाऊ तहसील के वांधिया गाँव पधारे। गाँव के बाजार से निकलते हुए अचानक श्रीहरि देवशी लुहार के घर में प्रविष्ट हुए और स्वयं खाट बिछाकर बैठ गए। देवशी लुहार ने लोहारखाने का कार्य छोड़कर तुरंत शीतल जल लाकर प्रभु को जलपान कराया।
श्रीहरि ने कहा, “हमें बहुत भूख लगी है, जो कुछ तैयार हो तुरंत खाने को दीजिए!” देवशी ने करबद्ध होकर कहा, “आप देवस्वरूप प्रतीत होते हैं; घर में केवल सुबह की सूखी ठंडी रोटी के टुकड़े हैं, वह आपको कैसे अर्पित करूँ? आप तनिक विश्राम कीजिए, मैं हलवा-पूरी (शीरा-पूरी) बनाकर लाता हूँ!” किंतु प्रभु ने हठपूर्वक कहा, “हमें तुरंत वही ठंडी रोटी दीजिए!” प्रभु ने वह रूखा-सूखा टुकड़ा बड़े प्रेम से खाया। तत्पश्चात हलवा-पूरी का भोग भी लगाया गया।
भोजनोपरांत मूलजी ब्रह्मचारी ने पूछा, “महाराज! इस लुहार पर ऐसी अकारण कृपा कैसे हुई कि आपने बिना बुलाए इसके घर खाट बिछाई और सूखी रोटी भी आरोगी?” श्रीहरि ने कहा, “ब्रह्मचारी! इसका कुरता हटाकर इसका कंधा देखिए!” देखा तो कंधे की त्वचा घिसकर लहूलुहान हो चुकी थी। श्रीजी महाराज ने बताया, “यह भक्त नित्य गाँव में कावड़ लेकर भिक्षा मांगता है और साधु-अभ्यागतों को भोजन कराता है। कावड़ ढोने से इसका कंधा छिल गया है! इसकी इसी निस्वार्थ सेवा से रीझकर हम आज इसके द्वार आए हैं!” प्रभु ने देवशी लुहार को दिव्य दर्शन देकर कृतार्थ किया।

Devshi Luhar of Vandhiya: Cold Millet Bread and the Fruit of the Daily Alms Kavadi
Touring through the arid region of Kutch with Mulji Brahmachari, Shreeji Maharaj entered the village of Vandhiya in Bhachau taluka. Walking down the bazaar, the Lord spontaneously turned into the open gateway of Devshi Luhar (a blacksmith) and sat upon a cot He laid out with His own hands. Dropping his hammer in the smithy, Devshi rushed out with a brass pot of cool water for the divine guest.
Shreehari said, “We are famished; bring whatever food is already available!” Folding his hands, Devshi submitted: “You appear to be a celestial being; I have only stale pieces of dry millet bread (rotla) in the house, which is unfit for You! Rest a moment while I prepare sweet wheat pudding (shiro) and fried puris!” But Shreehari insisted: “We are terribly hungry; give Us that cold bread right now!” Devshi served the dry crusts, and Shreehari relished them with deep satisfaction. Later, the fresh shiro-puri was also lovingly offered.
After dining, Mulji Brahmachari asked in wonder, “Maharaj, what extraordinary merit does this blacksmith possess that You arrived uninvited at his porch and relished his dry crusts?” Shreehari replied, “Brahmachari, pull back his shirt and inspect his shoulder!” Looking closely, Brahmachari saw that the skin upon Devshi’s shoulder had worn away into an open, bleeding callous. Shreeji Maharaj revealed: “Every single day, this devoted blacksmith carries a heavy wooden shoulder-yoke (kavadi) through the village streets to collect alms and feed destitute wanderers and holy ascetics! The friction of that yoke has cut deep into his flesh. Pleased beyond measure by his selfless charity, We arrived unbidden at his doorstep today!” Bestowing a vision of His divine form, the Lord blessed Devshi Luhar with ultimate salvation.
