Jeshankarbhai’s Selfless Service at Vadtal, Shreehari’s Warning, and Bearing Insults with Complete Humility at Anand
In Chapter 122 of the holy Bhakta Chintamani, Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami reverently commemorates the devout souls of Anand, including Dwij Dinkar, Sadashiv, Lakshmiram, and Jeshankarbhai Shelat. The devotees of Anand were renowned for their enthusiastic voluntary service in every festival celebrated at Vadtal.
During a grand Fuldol festival and the sacred thread ceremony (yajnopavita) of three young Brahmins, a massive feast for eighty-four Brahmin communities (Chhorasi) was organized. To prepare traditional laddus, fried dumplings had to be pounded late into the night with heavy wooden pestles. Hearing the rhythmic thuds, Shreeji Maharaj walked over at midnight to grace the seva site. Seeing Jeshankarbhai Shelat of Anand drenched in sweat from tireless physical labor, Maharaj embraced him with profound affection.
When the festival concluded and the Anand devotees took their leave, Shreeji Maharaj took off a fragrant garland of fresh roses from His own neck and placed it around Jeshankarbhai’s neck, giving a strict and explicit command: “Before entering your city of Anand, remove this garland from your neck; do not enter the city wearing it openly!”
However, en route to Anand, swept by emotional enthusiasm and rationalizing under the pretext of ‘spiritual glory’ (mahatmya), the devotees thought: “If the townspeople behold this sanctified garland from the Lord, their minds will be purified!” Forgetting the Lord’s protective command, Jeshankarbhai kept the garland around his neck.
At that time, Anand harbored many hostile adversaries of Satsang. Enraged by the sight, antagonists mocked them and violently ripped the sacred garland from Jeshankarbhai’s neck, trampling the blessed petals under their feet. This grave sacrilege toward the Lord’s holy prasadi corrupted the townspeople’s intellect with malice.
Subsequently, when Shreehari and His entourage—including formidable warriors like Joban Pagi, Sura Khachar, and Somla Khachar, alongside armed bodyguards—passed through Anand, the miscreants pelted them with stones, dirt, mud, and filthy insults. Although fully armed with loaded muskets and swords, the devotees obeyed Shreehari’s injunction of supreme non-violence and endured the onslaught with absolute humility (nirman).
The karmic retribution of this grave offense was severe: the slanderers lost their lineages and the town suffered immense tribulations. Years later, struck by remorse, the elders visited Vadtal, begged forgiveness from Acharya Raghuvirji Maharaj, and invited him to Anand to restore peace.
Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami recorded this in Bhakta Chintamani (Chapter 82): ‘Bhāgyavante Hari pūjiyā, abhāgī rahyā nar vām… Tyā̃thī sant hāliyā, niramānī man abhirām!’
