Forbearance of Two Hundred Saints in Vadodara: The British Officer Impressed by the Five Sublime Vows
A sacred traveling band of two hundred paramhansas of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya, led by Sadguru Vyapkanand Muni, arrived in the city of Vadodara. The ascetics set up their camp along the riverbank beneath a large stone bridge. Immersed in unbroken meditation and chanting until midnight, the sants lived with absolute simplicity.
Witnessing the pristine renunciation and soaring reputation of the Swaminarayan monks, envious Vairagi ascetics in the city grew bitter with jealousy. At night, disciples of the Vairagis hurled heavy bricks and stones from atop the bridge down upon the resting sants. Yet, true to their vows of forbearance, the paramhansas absorbed the blows in complete silence, offering prayers and forgiveness for their tormentors! Seeing that violent provocation failed to disturb the sants’ peace, the chief Mahant of the Vairagi hermitage approached the British Collector of Vadodara province, lodging a venomous complaint: “Sir! These Swaminarayan sadhus do not wear conventional sectarian beads or tufts, flout traditions, and mislead the public; you must drive them out of the city!”
The British Collector replied prudently, “Depart for now; I shall investigate the matter personally.” Toward dusk that very evening, the Collector arrived near the bridge accompanied by an armed police escort. From a discreet distance, he observed two hundred ascetics sitting in profound meditative silence with downcast eyes. He conducted a meticulous search: not a single pinch of tobacco, chillum, hookah, opium, cannabis, or iron tongs could be found anywhere! Their faces shone with unblemished innocence, purity, and spiritual radiance. Deeply touched by their demeanor, the Collector walked forward and inquired who their leader was. A sant replied, “Sadguru Vyapkanand Muni is our elder, and our fellowship numbers two hundred sants.” The Collector invited four representative sants to visit his office the following morning.
Next morning, Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami, Sadguru Akhandanand Swami, Gurucharanratanand Swami, and Shantanand Swami visited the British headquarters. The Collector respectfully offered chairs to the four monks while ordering the accusing Vairagis to stand outside! Sadguru Akhandanand Muni, hailing from the Punjab region, conversed in eloquent Hindustani. When the Collector asked who had initiated them, they answered proudly: “Our divine Guru is Bhagwan Sahjanand Swami Himself.” The sants explained the rigorous Five Sublime Vows (Panch Vartman) mandated by Shreeji Maharaj: total freedom from lust (nishkam), greed (nirlobh), taste/gluttony (niswad), worldly attachment (nisneh), and ego (nirman). Hearing this profound exposition, the British officer was utterly amazed. He immediately ordered his storekeeper to provide generous provisions of top-grade grain, ghee, and groceries for all two hundred sants.
Turning sternly toward the accusers, the Collector reprimanded them: “Without proper scrutiny, we mistakenly considered you authentic holy men! Our investigation reveals you possess no genuine sainthood; you hoard wealth, crave worldly pleasures, and consume intoxicants!” When the Vairagis defensively argued that holy chanting burns away all sins, the Collector retorted incisively: “Sins committed inadvertently may be purified through repentance; but sins committed willfully under the guise of religion never wash away!” Thoroughly disgraced, the Vairagis fled. The Collector assured the paramhansas of complete governmental protection and sent them away with deep veneration.
