Jethibai of Vadnagar: Unfaltering Devotion, the Inexhaustible Granary of Moth, and Divine Liberation
In the historic northern Gujarat town of Vadnagar lived Jethibai, a noble Brahmin widow who was a spiritually enlightened, profoundly devoted disciple of Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj. She had a pious, well-mannered son named Vanmali. Despite bitter social opposition and scorn from orthodox relatives, Jethibai boldly maintained her absolute faith in Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
Living in modest economic circumstances, she diligently saved from her meager earnings. Whenever Shreehari visited Vadnagar accompanied by His sadhus, she prepared sumptuous devotional platters (thal) with intense motherly love. Emulating Mirabai, she lived completely unattached to worldly praise or blame, continually immersed in divine love.
In Samvat 1869, when a severe drought ravaged Gujarat, Shreeji Maharaj toured the Dandhavya region and arrived in Vadnagar. Gracing Jethibai’s modest home, Maharaj seated Himself upon a low wooden pedestal on the veranda. Serving Him with boundless affection, Jethibai conversed intimately with the Lord while pressing Him to eat to His heart’s content. Shreehari thoroughly enjoyed the lovingly prepared meal.
After washing His hands, Jethibai stood before Shreeji Maharaj with folded hands and submitted an earnest prayer: “O Maharaj! Being poor Brahmins of very limited means, we cannot offer You the grand royal feasts You deserve. Furthermore, a catastrophic famine has descended upon our land! As for my son and me, we can somehow survive on whatever little we have; but please bestow Your divine grace so that no holy sadhu or devotee who knocks on our door ever turns away hungry—let our sacred vow of hospitality remain unbroken!”
Pleased by her selfless spirit, Shreehari inquired: “Jethibai! How much grain remains in your household storage bin (kothi)?” Jethibai answered: “Maharaj! Barely two maunds (approx. 40 kg) of moth beans remain in the granary!” Shreeji Maharaj immediately stepped into the inner storeroom, touched the large earthen granary with His sacred walking stick (chhadi), and commanded: “Jethibai! Place an inverted earthen bowl over the mouth of this granary and seal it completely with clay and cow-dung plaster! Never uncover the top opening! Draw out moth beans exclusively from the small wooden dispensing chute (sano) at the base! Until this entire famine subsides, the moth beans in this bin shall never be depleted! Feed visiting sadhus and devotees freely, and if necessary, sell grain from it to support your household expenses!” Bestowing this extraordinary boon, Shreehari departed.
With implicit faith in Shreehari’s words, Jethibai sealed the top of the granary. Throughout that grueling year of famine, she daily scooped out winnowing baskets full of grain from the bottom outlet! She nourished her family, fed every visiting guest and holy sadhu abundantly, and sold grain for necessary household expenses—yet the grain level never diminished by a single grain! Witnessing this living miracle, the skeptical relatives and townsfolk bowed in reverence before the infinite majesty of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
Years later, in her old age, Jethibai’s final earthly hour approached. Calling her son Vanmali, she announced: “Son! Today Lord Shreeji Maharaj is coming in person to take me home. Strictly abide by all moral injunctions and unceasingly remember the Lord!” Chanting the divine name with her final breath, she peacefully departed for Akshardham.
Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami immortalized Jethibai’s divine devotion in the sacred epic ‘Shri Bhaktachintamani’ (Chapter 119, Verse 39): “In Vadnagar dwell many souls, supreme and pure devotees of the Lord; Bechar and the pious twice-born brothers, and the blessed devotee Jethibai and Dolibai!”
