Dolibai’s Devotion at Vadnagar: Forgetting Serving Plates and Shreehari Feasting upon the Flat Stone Slab
On one occasion, Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj was journeying on foot, solitary and unannounced, from Vijapur toward the historic city of Vadnagar in North Gujarat. Approximately two kilometers outside Vadnagar, beside the tranquil shores of a village lake, stood an ancient temple dedicated to Mahadev. Shreehari halted within the temple precinct to rest.
Calling a passing traveler heading toward the town, Shreehari dispatched a verbal message to His devoted disciple Dolibai: “We have halted at the Mahadev temple by the lake and are feeling intensely hungry; prepare a meal swiftly and bring it here!”
Receiving this unexpected divine summons, Dolibai was overwhelmed with ecstatic joy! What greater spiritual fortune could befall a mortal than to have the Supreme Lord personally request food from her kitchen? She immediately kindled her stove and, using whatever ingredients were at hand, lovingly cooked steaming hot rotlis, spiced lentils, rice, vegetables, and sweets.
Wrapped in a cloth bundle, Dolibai rushed along the dusty trail toward the lake. However, midway along the path, she suddenly gasped in horror: in her frenzied haste, she had completely forgotten to pack plates, bowls, or brass utensils! Distress washed over her heart as tears welled in her eyes: “Alas! How wretched and thoughtless am I! The hungry Lord requested food, yet I brought no platters or dishes! In what shall I serve my beloved Master?”
Arriving at the lakeside temple in tears, she fell at Shreehari’s feet and confessed her mistake. The omniscient Lord perceived the purity of her overflowing love. Smiling with radiant warmth, Shreeji Maharaj stroked a large, naturally flat, smooth stone slab (chhint) resting under the shade of a tree and reassured her: “Dolibai! Have no anxiety whatsoever; serve whatever you have brought with such tender love directly upon this smooth stone slab! We shall joyfully dine from this stone with immense relish!”
The Supreme Purushottam Narayan, within whose every pore countless millions of cosmic universes revolve, sat upon the bare earth and dined from that open rock slab as though it were the most opulent golden platter in heaven! Thoroughly pleased, He washed His hands and blessed Dolibai abundantly before gracing the township of Vadnagar at her loving behest.
To this very day, that sacred stone slab (chhint) upon which the Supreme Lord feasted is preserved with utmost veneration within the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir in Vadnagar, where thousands of pilgrims behold it in awe.
Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami commemorated Dolibai’s divine devotion in the sacred epic ‘Shri Bhaktachintamani’ (Chapter 119, Verse 39): “In Vadnagar dwell many souls, supreme and pure devotees of the Lord; Bechar and the twice-born brothers, and the blessed devotees Jethibai and Dolibai!”
