Madhavji Sheth of Shiyal: The Unbroken Stream of Ghee and Credit Redeemed in Akshardham
While touring with a large congregation of sants and householder devotees, Shreeji Maharaj arrived in the village of Shiyal in the Bavla taluka of Ahmedabad district. Residing in the village was Madhavji Sheth, a devout and deeply devoted disciple of the Lord. He was a wealthy and respected wholesale grocery merchant, yet remained remarkably humble, charitable, and free from ego. Hearing of Shreehari’s arrival, he organized a grand musical reception and bowed reverently at the Lord’s feet.
Folding his hands, Madhavji Sheth pleaded, “O Maharaj! Please halt here for the day; it is my earnest longing to feast the entire pilgrimage congregation!” Beholding his pure devotion, Shreeji Maharaj replied, “Sheth! The congregation is vast, so simply feed everyone piping hot khichdi!” Madhavji Sheth bowed cheerfully, “As You command, Lord! But only after everyone is thoroughly satisfied shall we allow the congregation to resume its journey!”
Once the food was prepared, an offering was first placed before Shreehari. Thereafter, long dining rows of Kathi chieftains, sants, brahmacharis, and attendants were seated on the veranda. Handing a polished pitcher of pure clarified butter (ghee) to Shreeji Maharaj, Madhavji Sheth said with heartfelt emotion: “O Lord! Please serve the ghee onto the khichdi with Your own divine hands; but I make one earnest condition—the pouring stream of ghee must remain continuous and never break, on my sacred oath!” Bound by His devotee’s love, Shreehari began serving. Walking swiftly along the rows, He poured lavish cascades of ghee until lakes of golden butter surrounded every serving of khichdi! To honor the merchant’s vow, Shreeji Maharaj never raised or broke the stream of ghee, delighting Madhavji Sheth with His loving sport.
Before departing, members of the pilgrim party visited Sheth’s provisions shop to purchase flour, lentils, rice, and spices for their upcoming journey. When the devotees offered to pay, the head clerk flatly refused: “Our master has given strict orders that not a single copper coin is to be accepted from any Swaminarayan devotee!” Puzzled and reluctant to accept charity, the devotees reported the matter to Shreeji Maharaj. The Lord summoned Madhavji Sheth and began handing him cash directly from His own hands.
Madhavji Sheth folded his hands and submitted with deep conviction: “O Maharaj! I have no desire to collect perishable coins from You in this transient mortal world! My sacred bargain with You is that You must repay this entire debt to me in Akshardham with compound interest!”
Struck by Madhavji Sheth’s profound spiritual wisdom and unshakable faith, Shreehari was overwhelmed with joy. Placing both His holy hands upon the merchant’s head, the Lord blessed him: “O Madhavji Sheth! For the selfless hospitality you have showered upon Our sants and devotees, We shall indeed repay you with eternal divine bliss in Akshardham! Truly, you are none other than a living manifestation of the ancient, righteous merchant Tuladhar!”
