Jethabhai Vipra of Shihor: A Basket of Sweet Jamun Fruit and the Sacred Tree Planted Behind Akshar Ordi
In the historic town of Shihor in Gohilwad lived a righteous and deeply devoted Brahmin named Jethabhai. In the summer month of Jeth, the jamun (rose apple) trees along the riverbank in his orchard yielded exceptionally sweet, succulent purple fruit. Jethabhai formed a pure spiritual resolution: ‘Before offering these fruits to anyone, I shall travel to Gadhpur and offer the very first harvest to my beloved Lord Shreeji Maharaj!’ Harvesting a large basket at sunset, he hitched his bullock cart and journeyed through the night, arriving in Gadhpur at dawn.
Shreeji Maharaj was seated on the veranda of Akshar Ordi holding an assembly with Sura Khachar, Somla Khachar, and the saints. Jethabhai approached and reverently placed the basket of jamun at Shrihari’s lotus feet. Mulji Brahmachari washed the fruit in a large silver platter. Relishing the jamuns with divine satisfaction, Shrihari praised His devotee’s love and remarked with a smile, “Jethabhagat! This jamun tree must surely stand along a riverbank, for these fruits are remarkably juicier and sweeter than ordinary ones!” Overcome with emotion, Jethabhai replied, “O Lord, nothing is hidden from You! My father planted that tree upon the riverbank years ago; today, by Your tasting them, our lives have been sanctified!”
Shreeji Maharaj distributed the prasad to the assembly and handed a handful back to Jethabhai, proclaiming: “Bhagat! We shall personally plant these sacred seeds behind the Akshar Ordi. When this tree matures, its fruits shall be offered daily to Shree Gopinathji Maharaj, ensuring the eternal liberation of your entire lineage!”
The following morning, Shrihari personally dug a pit behind Akshar Ordi, filled it with fertile soil, sprinkled His holy foot-wash water (charanamrit), and planted the seeds with His own hands, instructing attendants Ratanji and Miyaji to nurture the sapling. Within years, the tree flourished and produced sweet fruit offered daily to Gopinathji Maharaj. Even after Shrihari’s departure for Akshardham in Samvat 1886, the holy tree continued to nourish devotees for decades. Today, the sanctified trunk of that legendary jamun tree remains reverently preserved for darshan in the Gadhpur temple.
