Buttermilk Churning in Sarangpur: Shrihari Pulling the Ropes for Rande Ba and the Sacred Butter
Shreeji Maharaj was residing in the royal court of Jiva Khachar in Sarangpur. One morning during the ambrosial hours of dawn, while the morning star still twinkled in the dim twilight, Shreehari quietly slipped out of the Darbargadh alone and walked to the home of His beloved devotee, Rathod Dhandhal. Rathod Dhandhal had gone out to his fields, leaving his pious wife, Rande Ba, alone at home.
Stepping into the courtyard, Shreehari called out warmly. Rande Ba, who cherished intense maternal affection for the Lord, was in the kitchen vigorously churning a large clay pot of curd with a wooden churning rod (valonu). Hearing the familiar divine voice, she called back: “Come in, Maharaj! Rest on the veranda for a moment while I fetch a cot for You!” Instead, the playful Lord bypassed the veranda and walked straight into the smoky kitchen! Rande Ba was drenched in perspiration from vigorously pulling the churning cords, yet the golden butter had not yet separated from the buttermilk.
With an endearing smile, Shreeji Maharaj said, “Mother! If you have other chores, attend to them and let Me pull the churning cords for a while! It has been such a long time since I churned buttermilk!” Rande Ba stepped aside in wonder, while the Sovereign of infinite universes sat down upon the cow-dung plastered floor, gripped the churning cords, and began rhythmically spinning the wooden churn!
Watching the Almighty Lord churn buttermilk in her humble kitchen, Rande Ba’s heart melted in overwhelming devotion. As Maharaj rhythmically pulled the ropes, glistening pearls of perspiration formed upon His radiant cheeks. The round vermilion mark on His forehead gently streaked with sweat, creating an enchantingly celestial visage! As this divine form was indelibly imprinted upon Rande Ba’s consciousness, uncontrollable tears of divine love cascaded from her eyes.
Glancing up with a playful twinkle, Shreehari asked, “Mother! What is this? Has sweat broken out in your eyes as well?” Choked with emotion, Rande Ba replied, “O Maharaj! How can people truly understand God? Does sweat ever flow from the eyes? These are tears of boundless joy at witnessing Your incomprehensible grace!” Within moments, Maharaj finished churning, and a bountiful mound of pristine butter floated to the surface of the earthen pot. Maharaj teased, “Mother! Wipe the sweat from your eyes and gather the butter!”
Praying that this vision would remain perpetually radiant within her soul, Rande Ba seated Shreehari upon a comfortable cot on the veranda and served Him a bowl of fresh butter blended with powdered rock sugar. Shreehari relished the sweet butter with childlike delight, returning half the bowl as sanctified prasad. Just then, Rathod Dhandhal returned from his farm, overjoyed to find the Supreme Lord blessing his doorstep. Together, the devotee couple partook of the sacred butter.
When Shreeji Maharaj returned to Jiva Khachar’s court, His white robes were speckled with white droplets of buttermilk. Beholding the stains, His witty companion Sura Khachar teased aloud: “Well, well, Maharaj! Did You play Holi with buttermilk early this morning? You need not confess, for Your divine escapades can never stay hidden!” Shreehari burst into joyous laughter: “O Sura Khachar! It is precisely to reveal Our divine presence to the world that We enact these wondrous sports!”
