Shri Hari’s Divine Pastimes from Sarangpur to Jande: Vagha Khachar’s Devotion and Distributing Feast from Sadhus’ Jolis on Ekadashi

On one occasion in the evening, supreme Lord Swaminarayan arrived at the Darbargadh of Jiva Khachar in Sarangpur. Jiva Khachar’s devout wife, Shitba, lovingly prepared a feast and seated Shri Hari upon a wooden pedestal, feeding Him with deep affection. Shri Hari partook of the meal and handed the sanctified remnants to Jiva Khachar. After accepting mukhvas, Shri Hari reclined upon a cot, while Vagha Khachar joyfully massaged the Lord’s divine lotus feet. Jiva Khachar, Shitba, and Vagha Khachar lovingly pleaded with the Lord to prolong His stay in Sarangpur for several more days.

The next morning, after completing His daily morning prayers, Shri Hari was putting on His garments when a poor village farmer woman arrived in the courtyard. Prostrating reverently, she cried: “O Lord! The monsoon season is slipping away without a drop of rain. If You do not shower rain, our crops will wither, and our cattle will perish for lack of fodder and water!” Stepping out onto the veranda, Shri Hari revealed: “Good woman! We desire to travel to Gadhada. If Jiva Khachar grants Us leave to depart from here, the moment We arrive in Gadhada, torrential rains shall pour from the skies!” The anxious woman immediately pleaded with Jiva Khachar, securing his permission for Shri Hari’s departure.

Traveling from Sarangpur towards Gadhada with the sadhus, Shri Hari halted at the outskirts of Jande village beneath the dense shade of a leafy tree. Sadguru Atmanand Swami spread a clean cloth, upon which Shri Hari reclined comfortably. After a short rest, the young sadhus dug a small seepage pit (virado) in the dry sandy riverbed and fetched pure, cool water for the Lord. Drinking the water, Shri Hari praised it: “This water from the sand pit is as wonderfully sweet and pure as nectar from the holy Gangajaliyo well!”

The sadhus offered roasted grams (daliya) and raw jaggery in a bronze plate. While eating, Shri Hari inquired, “What other provisions are stored in the sadhus’ shoulder bags (jolis)?” Vaishnavanand Swami submitted with folded hands: “O Maharaj! Today is the holy day of Ekadashi, and all the sadhus are observing a strict waterless fast (nirjala upavas)!” Shri Hari chuckled and asked: “Holy sadhus! Who established the discipline of Ekadashi?” The sadhus answered: “O Lord! It was created solely by Your divine will and command.” Then, performing an unforgettable pastime, Shri Hari decreed: “A sadhu’s begging bag is like Kamadhenu (the wish-fulfilling cow)! Whatever each of you carries in your jolis, bring it forth; today We shall feed all our sadhus!”

Shri Hari spread a large white sheet on the ground. The sadhus brought out whatever they carried in their bags—roasted chickpeas, peanuts, jaggery, and rock sugar crystals—heaping them together. Radiant with divine joy, Shri Hari scooped up handfuls of the mixed food with His own holy hands and lovingly fed all the fasting sadhus on that Ekadashi day! Sanctified by the touch of the Lord’s lotus hands, the sadhus partook of the divine feast in transcendental bliss.
