Nilkanth Varni’s Advent in Piplana, the Mother’s Transformation, and the Sanctified Meal on the Banks of River Ozat
During His seven-year rigorous forest penance across the sacred geography of India, young ascetic Nilkanth Varni arrived in Piplana from Junagadh in the Sorath region.
In Piplana lived Narsinh Mehta, a pious Brahmin householder deeply devoted to Sadguru Ramanand Swami. Nilkanth Varni arrived at his courtyard and peacefully seated Himself upon His deerskin on the front veranda (oto), closing His eyes in deep meditation.
Narsinh Mehta had gone to the fields, leaving his elderly mother alone at home. Weary of deceitful wandering mendicants, she mistook Varni for a common beggar and rebuked Him sharply: “O Bawa! Why have you planted yourself here? Stand up and begone! No alms or food are offered to wanderers at our door!”
Hearing these stinging words, young ascetic Nilkanth Varni smiled gently, gathered His deerskin, and remarked with subtle divinity: “Mother! There is none other like Us in this entire universe; We are unique! Worry not, We shall surely return to your home!” With these profound words, Nilkanth Varni walked out of Piplana and seated Himself beneath a sprawling banyan tree on the serene banks of the river Ozat, facing east in profound contemplation.
However, as He departed, Varni had cast an ambrosial glance of divine grace upon Narsinh Mehta’s elderly mother! That single glance transformed her consciousness instantaneously. A wave of profound repentance swept over her. Varni’s enchanting, ascetically radiant form began manifesting vividly before her inner vision! Whether she kept her eyes open or shut, that very same divine youth appeared before her everywhere. Weeping in remorse, she thought: “Alas! I rebuked that tender young ascetic and drove Him away hungry! He was no ordinary mendicant, but a divine incarnation; otherwise, how could His form possess my entire being so completely?”
Just then, Narsinh Mehta returned from the fields. His mother recounted everything in tears: “Son! A divine young ascetic graced our doorstep, but in my ignorance I turned Him away! Run swiftly, locate Him, and escort Him back with honor!”
Narsinh Mehta sprinted to the outskirts and found radiant Nilkanth Varni meditating beneath the banyan tree by the river Ozat. Falling prostrate at Varni’s feet, he pleaded with folded hands: “O Supreme Lord! My mother is simple and naive; please forgive her transgression, grace our humble home, and purify us!” Nilkanth Varni rose graciously and returned to Narsinh Mehta’s home.
The mother lovingly prepared an elaborate platter of consecrated sweets (ladus), rice, lentils, and fresh vegetables. Offering the feast to Thakorji, she served Varni with motherly tenderness. Watching Varni eat gracefully, she confessed: “O holy Brahmachari! You are unlike any mendicant in this world; ever since You stepped off our porch, Your radiant form has remained continuously enshrined in my heart!” Nilkanth Varni smiled: “Behold, Mother! This divine form does not manifest in anyone’s contemplation so easily; you are a spiritual aspirant from past lives, and God’s boundless grace has descended upon you!”
The joyous mother advised: “Our revered guru, Sadguru Ramanand Swami, is our Supreme Master! If You seek ultimate liberation, journey to His feet in the nearby village of Loj!” Blessing her, Nilkanth Varni resumed His journey toward Loj.
Years later, when Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj visited Piplana alongside Sadguru Ramanand Swami and an assembly of sadhus, Ramanand Swami introduced Sahajanand Swami to Narsinh Mehta’s mother: “Mother! This Sahajanand Swami is the Supreme Purushottam Bhagwan, the fountainhead of all avatars! If you hold faith in my words, cease meditating upon me and enshrine this young ascetic continuously in your heart and worship!”
The elderly mother bowed before Ramanand Swami and recalled: “Gurudev! Years ago, an identical radiant young ascetic graced my home whom I turned away in ignorance; from that very day, His divine form has danced unceasingly before my mind!”
At that moment, Sahajanand Swami Himself smiled and unveiled the mystery: “Mother! It was indeed We who visited your home on that day! You turned Us away, whereupon We sat beneath the banyan tree by the Ozat river until Narsinh Mehta brought Us back, and you lovingly fed Us that sumptuous feast!”
Hearing these words directly from Shreehari’s lips, streams of joyous tears cascaded down the mother’s cheeks! She cried in ecstasy: “O Gurudev! Today my human existence has attained supreme fulfillment, for I have recognized the Supreme Lord in human form!” Thus, Ramanand Swami and Shreehari firmly grounded Narsinh Mehta and his mother in unshakeable conviction of the Lord’s supreme divinity.
