ઘેલા નદીએ મનમાં ધારેલા સંકલ્પ પ્રમાણે ગઢપુરમાં શ્રીહરિએ દેવજીને છડી મારી અને હરજીની છાતીએ ચરણ મૂક્યા; અંતર્યામીપણાની પ્રતીતિ થતાં બંને ભાઈઓ સત્સંગી થયા.
સૌરાષ્ટ્રના પાણવી ગામમાં હરજી અને દેવજી નામે બે સગા કુંભાર ભાઈઓ રહેતા હતા. સદ્ગુરુ સંતોના વિચરણ દરમિયાન બંને ભાઈઓ સંતોના સંપર્કમાં આવ્યા. સંતોનું ત્યાગી, નિર્મળ અને પવિત્ર જીવન જોઈ તેમના મનમાં સંતો પ્રત્યે ખૂબ ગુણ આવ્યો. સંતોએ તેમને ગઢપુરમાં પ્રગટ બિરાજતા પૂર્ણ પુરુષોત્તમ શ્રીજીમહારાજનાં દર્શન કરી માનવ જન્મ સફળ કરવા પ્રેરણા આપી.
પરંતુ અગાઉ સંસારમાં અનેક ઢોંગી બાવા-સાધુઓના કડવા અનુભવો થયા હોવાથી બંને ભાઈઓના મનમાં સંપૂર્ણ વિશ્વાસ બેસતો નહોતો. તેમણે પરસ્પર વિચાર કર્યો: “આપણે પોતે જ ગઢપુર જઈને જાતે ખરાઈ કરીએ; જો સાચે જ સ્વામિનારાયણ સાક્ષાત્ ભગવાન હોય તો જ આપણે એમનો આશરો કરવો!”
બંને ભાઈઓ ગઢપુર આવ્યા. પવિત્ર ઘેલા નદીમાં સ્નાન કરતી વેળાએ બંને ભાઈઓએ મનોમન શ્રીહરિની પરીક્ષા કરવા માટે અંદરોઅંદર ગુપ્ત સંકલ્પ કર્યો. દેવજીએ હરજીને કહ્યું: “ભાઈ! જો સ્વામિનારાયણ સાચે જ અંતર્યામી ભગવાન હોય, તો હું દર્શન કરવા જાઉં ત્યારે મારી પીઠ (વાંસા) પર હાથમાં રહેલી સોટી (છડી) મારે!” ત્યારે હરજીએ પોતાનો સંકલ્પ જણાવતાં કહ્યું: “અને જો એ સાચા ભગવાન હોય, તો મારા મસ્તક કે છાતી પર પોતાના કંકુવર્ણા ચરણારવિંદ પધરાવે!”
ઘેલા નદીમાં સ્નાન કરી બંને ભાઈઓ કોઈને પણ કહ્યા વગર સીધા દરબારગઢમાં શ્રીહરિના દર્શને પહોંચ્યા. તે સમયે પૂર્ણ પુરુષોત્તમ શ્રીજીમહારાજ લીમડાના વૃક્ષ નીચે ઢોલિયા પર સંતો-હરિભક્તોની વિશાળ સભા વચ્ચે બિરાજમાન હતા. અંતર્યામી શ્રીહરિ બંને ભાઈઓના મનની ગુપ્ત પરીક્ષા જાણી ચૂક્યા હતા.
જેવા હરજી અને દેવજી સભામાં આગળ વધી શ્રીહરિના ચરણોમાં નમન કરવા ઝૂક્યા, કે તત્ક્ષણ શ્રીજીમહારાજે પોતાના હાથમાં રહેલી સોનાની મૂઠવાળી લાકડી (છડી) જોરથી દેવજીના વાંસામાં ફટકારી! છડીનો માર વાગતાં જ દેવજીના રોમેરોમમાં વીજળીનો સંચાર થયો અને તે મનોમન પોકારી ઊઠ્યો: “ઓહો! આ તો સાક્ષાત્ સર્વજ્ઞ ભગવાન છે!” બરાબર તે જ પળે શ્રીહરિએ પોતાનો જમણો ચરણકમળ ઊંચો કરી ઝૂકેલા હરજીની છાતી પર પધરાવી દીધો! હરજીના હૃદયમાં અલૌકિક શીતળતા અને પરમ આનંદ વ્યાપી ગયો!
સભામાં શ્રીહરિ સમીપે બિરાજેલા સદ્ગુરુ શ્રી મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીએ આશ્ચર્ય પામી પૂછ્યું: “હે મહારાજ! દર્શને આવેલા આ નિર્દોષ ભાઈઓ પર આપે એકને છડી મારી અને બીજાની છાતી પર ચરણ કેમ મૂક્યા?” ત્યારે શ્રીજીમહારાજે ખડખડાટ હસતાં સભા સમક્ષ રહસ્ય ખોલ્યું: “સ્વામી! આ હરજી અને દેવજી બંને કુંભાર ભાઈઓ ઘેરથી નીકળીને ઘેલા નદીએ નાહતી વખતે મનમાં આવો જ સંકલ્પ કરીને અમારી પરીક્ષા કરવા આવ્યા હતા!”
પોતાના ગુપ્ત સંકલ્પની એક-એક વાત સાક્ષાત્ પ્રભુના મુખેથી જાહેર થતી સાંભળી હરજી અને દેવજીની આંખોમાંથી પશ્ચાત્તાપ અને હર્ષનાં આંસુ વહેવા લાગ્યાં! તેઓ શ્રીહરિના ચરણોમાં સાષ્ટાંગ ઢળી પડ્યા અને કરગરતાં વિનંતી કરી: “હે અંતર્યામી પ્રભુ! અમારા પામર જીવની ભૂલ ક્ષમા કરો, આપ જ સાક્ષાત્ સર્વાવતારી પૂર્ણ પુરુષોત્તમ ભગવાન છો!”
બંને ભાઈઓએ તત્કાળ કંઠી બાંધી, પંચવર્તમાન ગ્રહણ કર્યાં અને પાંચ દિવસ ગઢપુરમાં રોકાઈ સંતો-હરિભક્તોના દિવ્ય સત્સંગનો લાભ લીધો. શ્રીહરિના આશીર્વાદથી પાણવીના આ કુંભાર ભાઈઓ આજીવન અણડગ નિષ્ઠાવાન સત્સંગી બન્યા.

पाणवी के हरजी और देवजी कुम्हार की गढ़पुर में परीक्षा, छड़ी का प्रहार और हृदय पर चरणारविंद
पाणवी के हरजी और देवजी कुम्हार ने गढ़पुर जाते समय मन में परीक्षा का संकल्प किया।
घेला नदी पर देवजी ने संकल्प किया कि यदि स्वामीनारायण सच्चे भगवान हैं तो मेरी पीठ पर छड़ी मारें; और हरजी ने संकल्प किया कि वे मेरे सीने पर चरणारविंद रखें।
दरबारगढ़ में जैसे ही दोनों झुके, अंतर्यामी श्रीहरि ने हाथ की छड़ी देवजी की पीठ पर लगाई और हरजी के सीने पर अपने चरण रख दिए! मुक्तानंद स्वामी द्वारा पूछने पर श्रीजी ने उनका गुप्त संकल्प प्रकट कर दिया।
दोनों भाई अश्रु बहाते हुए चरणों में गिर पड़े और कंठी धारण कर आजीवन पक्के सत्संगी बने।

Testing the Lord at Gadhpur: Harji and Devji Kumbhar of Panvi, the Strike of the Cane, and Holy Feet on the Chest
In the village of Panvi in Saurashtra lived two brothers of the potter community named Harji and Devji Kumbhar. During spiritual tours by holy sadhus, the brothers came into close contact with the fellowship. Deeply inspired by the pure, unblemished, and detached lives of the ascetics, they felt profound respect for the movement. The sadhus encouraged them to visit Gadhpur and behold the Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj in person to attain the highest purpose of human life.
However, having suffered bitter disillusionment in the past at the hands of fraudulent ascetics and self-styled godmen, the brothers remained skeptical. Conferring privately, they decided: “Let us journey to Gadhpur and test the reality ourselves; only if Swaminarayan proves to be the genuine, all-knowing Supreme Godhead shall we accept initiation under Him!”
Upon reaching Gadhpur, as they bathed in the holy waters of the river Ghela, the brothers devised a secret, unspoken test to probe Shreehari’s omniscience. Devji proposed to Harji: “Brother! If Swaminarayan is truly the omniscient Supreme Lord, the moment I bow before Him, He must strike my back with the cane (soti) in His hand!” Harji added his own condition: “And if He is truly God, He must press His sanctified lotus feet directly against my chest!”
Concluding their bath, without breathing a word of their secret pact to anyone, the brothers ascended to the Darbargadh to attend Maharaj’s assembly. Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj was seated upon a decorated cot beneath the shade of the sacred neem tree, delivering discourses before a massive congregation of sadhus and devotees. The all-knowing Lord was fully aware of the secret challenge harbored within the brothers’ hearts.
As Harji and Devji stepped into the center of the assembly and bowed low to touch the Lord’s holy feet, Shreeji Maharaj instantly struck Devji’s back firmly with the golden-handled walking stick (chhadi) in His right hand! The sharp strike sent a divine surge of electric energy coursing through Devji’s limbs, causing him to inwardly cry out in awe: “Behold! He is truly the omniscient Supreme God!” At that very instant, Shreehari raised His divine right lotus foot and pressed it firmly against Harji’s bowed chest! A wave of celestial peace and ecstatic bliss inundated Harji’s entire being!
Seated beside Maharaj, Sadguru Muktanand Swami was astonished and inquired: “O Maharaj! Why did You strike one of these humble newcomers with Your cane and place Your sacred foot upon the other’s chest?” Shreeji Maharaj burst into cheerful laughter and revealed the mystery to the entire assembly: “Swami! While bathing in the Ghela river this morning, these two potter brothers from Panvi formulated this exact secret test to examine Our divinity!”
Hearing their private thoughts revealed word-for-word before the entire congregation, streams of tears flowed from the eyes of Harji and Devji! Collapsing into the dust at Shreehari’s lotus feet, they pleaded with folded hands: “O All-Knowing Supreme Lord! Forgive our foolish audacity; You alone are the manifest Supreme Purushottam Narayan, the master of all cosmic realms!”
Both brothers immediately received the sacred kanthi, took the five moral vows, and stayed in Gadhpur for five blessed days, absorbing the divine fellowship of the holy sadhus. Through Shreehari’s grace, they remained steadfast, exemplary devotees throughout their lives.
