The Feast of Shelan in Panchala: Motiba’s Generosity and the Salvation of the Nomadic Pilgrim
In the village of Panchala in the Panchal region lived Motiba, the pious wife of Gagabhai (brother of the noble devotee Jinabhai Darbar). Whenever Shreehari graced Panchala with His sants, Motiba tirelessly managed the culinary arrangements, lodging, and spiritual assemblies for women with pure devotion.
Once, Shreeji Maharaj resolved to host a grand community feast for all the surrounding villages. When He asked the village elders which sweet delicacy they preferred, they replied enthusiastically: “O Maharaj! If You wish to gladden the heart of the entire Panchal countryside, feed us traditional ‘Shelan’!” Shelan was a rustic local delicacy consisting of thick country rice tossed with warm liquid jaggery, over which continuous cascades of molten ghee were ladled until the eating bowls overflowed, allowing diners to drink the rich, sweet mixture directly. Shreeji Maharaj Personally walked down the long rows, ladling endless streams of ghee with His own hands.
At that time, an impoverished nomadic blacksmith clan (Luvariya) had camped with their bullock carts on the village periphery. Moved by supreme compassion for these destitute wanderers, Shreehari summoned them with great warmth, seated them in dining rows, and personally served them the sumptuous feast of Shelan. The image of the radiant Lord smilingly ladling golden butter was indelibly etched into the heart of one elderly nomad.
Years later, as this old nomad lay upon his deathbed in a distant village, having practiced no formal penance or scriptures, his memory focused entirely upon that luminous figure of Shreeji Maharaj serving Shelan in Panchala. Exclaiming joyfully, “The Lord who fed me Shelan has arrived to take me!” he ascended directly to the divine abode. Simultaneously, Shreehari granted a divine vision to Motiba in Panchala, declaring: “Motiba! We have just escorted that humble Luvariya soul home to Akshardham!”
