The Divine Daily Routine of Ekantik Devotees Devjibhai and Janbai of Nenpur Extolled by Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami
In the village of Nenpur near Jetalpur lived the elevated devotee Devjibhai and his devout wife Janbai, who stood among the foremost jewels of Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s fellowship. They led a life of pure detachment, meditating on Shrihari’s divine form and chanting 500 rosaries every single day while attending to their agricultural duties.
Once, Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami and Krupanand Swami visited Nenpur and lodged at the village temple. Devjibhai was laboring in his fields, but his wife Janbai immediately sent provisions for the saints’ meals. In the evening, the saints held an assembly, expounding the glory of Shreeji Maharaj.
Returning from his farm late in the evening, Devjibhai learned of Gunatitanand Swami’s arrival. Without stopping to eat dinner, he grabbed his prayer beads and ran to the temple, prostrating before the holy saints. He sat engrossed in spiritual discourse until midnight. Seeing his exhaustion from farm labor, Gunatitanand Swami affectionately urged him, “Bhagat! You must be tired from a full day’s toil; go home and rest!”
Devjibhai humbly described his nocturnal schedule: “Swami! I shall go home now, take a light meal, and proceed to my field to guard the millet crops. There, atop an elevated watchtower in the center of the field, I sit meditating upon Shrihari and chant five hundred rosaries! At 3:00 AM, I permit sleep to overtake me for an hour, telling the goddess of sleep: ‘If you wish to come, come now, for after 4:00 AM your service shall not be entertained!’ At 4:00 AM, I awaken, sing the holy Swaminarayan Mahamantra, chant morning devotional hymns commemorating all the saints and devotees, return home at dawn, complete my morning puja, read two Vachanamruts at the temple, and head back to the farm!”
Hearing of this astonishing round-the-clock spiritual dedication, Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami turned to Krupanand Swami with deep veneration: “Look, Swami! There is an adage that the disciple surpasses the master! We have renounced hearth and home as ascetics, yet we can hardly match the ceaseless devotional absorption of this Devjibhai! Remaining immersed in household duties, he lives completely unattached like a lotus in water. Even beholding such an elevated soul ensures ultimate liberation!”
