Sadguru Ramanand Swami’s Disciplining with Wooden Footwear at Moti Sankali and the Standard of Ascetic Ethics

On one occasion, Sadguru Shri Ramanand Swami, the divine incarnation of Uddhava, arrived at Moti Sankali village accompanied by his sadhus. He spiritually nurtured the village devotees with devotional discourses and moral teachings. The village featured an expansive historic stepwell known as the ‘Thirteen-Pulleys Stepwell’ (Ter-Koshi Vav). Having bathed in its waters, Ramanand Swami sat in deep meditation upon a stone slab along the stepwell’s edge.

Meanwhile, two young sadhus entered the village to seek food alms (bhiksha) according to monastic rules. Standing in the courtyard of a Patidar farmer, they called out: “Narayan Hare! Sachchidanand Prabho Hare!” Inside the kitchen, the farmer’s wife was baking flatbreads (rotlas). Hearing the holy call, she took a rotlo in hand to donate, but a fleeting hesitation crossed her mind: ‘Should I give the sadhu this entire rotlo, or only half of it?’

Standing in the yard, one of the sadhus clairvoyantly perceived her private dilemma through his subtle yogic insight and called out aloud: “Mother! Hand over the entire rotlo; why contemplate giving only half?” Overwhelmed with awe, the woman thought, ‘This holy man is truly omniscient!’ Filled with deep reverence, she dropped the whole rotlo into the sadhu’s begging bag and offered prostrations.

Gathering their alms, the sadhus returned to the stepwell and approached Gurudev Ramanand Swami. As the sadhu bent down to bow at his feet, Ramanand Swami, emerging from meditation, struck the sadhu’s head firmly with his heavy wooden footwear (pāvadi)! The sharp blow drew a trickle of blood from the sadhu’s scalp. Yet without the slightest sign of anger, resentment, or protest, the disciplined monk remained serenely silent; he simply pressed a pinch of clean earth against the scratch, tore a strip of cloth from his cotton dhoti to bandage the wound, and bowed peacefully. Afterward, all three sadhus partook of the meal.

Three carpenters working on the wooden scaffolding of the stepwell had observed this entire silent episode with utter bewilderment: ‘Why did the Guru strike his disciple on the head with wooden footwear without a single word of rebuke? And why did the struck monk endure the blow in absolute, humble silence without offering any excuse?’

Once their labor concluded, the three carpenters approached Ramanand Swami, bowed reverently, and asked about the incident. Ramanand Swami explained with uncompromising spiritual clarity: “For an ascetic monk to employ his yogic clairvoyance and spiritual powers merely to extract a loaf of bread as alms is a serious breach of ascetic discipline! In order to crush any nascent seed of spiritual pride within that sadhu, I delivered that sharp blow with my wooden footwear!”

Stunned by Ramanand Swami’s uncompromising moral integrity and the young disciple’s exemplary humility, the three carpenters realized: “This is undeniably a truly enlightened divine Satpurush!” All three accepted spiritual vows and joined the fellowship. Subsequently, Ramanand Swami assembled leading village devotees, including Bhagwanjibhai Thakkar, Karshan Suthar, and Ramji Suthar, establishing an enduring charitable kitchen (sadavrat) in Moti Sankali to feed wandering ascetics and the needy.
