Sadguru Atmanand Swami’s Divine Power and the Sugarcane Press at Mota Mandva
Balanand and Vithalanand, two disciple sadhus of Sadguru Atmanand Swami, predominantly stayed at the home of Lakhuma Charan in Lodhva village, propagating Satsang throughout the neighboring regions. Two devoted householders from that area, Mavji Vanik and Doso Kumbhar, traveled to Nagher to invite Sadguru Atmanand Swami to their village. Swami graciously consented, and the spiritual entourage commenced their journey. On their way, they passed through the large village of Mota Mandva. The traveling party of nine included Juktanand, Muktanand, Ramanand Swami, Bhairamdasji, Valbai, Harbai, and other devotees.
At the boundary of Mandva village, next to the road, lay a lush sugarcane farm where a sugarcane press (chinchodo) was operating at full swing. Beholding the fresh sugarcane, the sadhus and devotees felt an impulse to partake of it, so all nine of them sat by the heap of harvested cane and began eating. Seeing this, the farmer owning the field rushed forward in a fury and shouted, “Whose guru is this, who dares eat sugarcane without seeking permission from the master of the field?”
Hearing this, the realized ascetic Sadguru Atmanand Swami replied with calm majesty: “My name is Sadhu Atmanand. Forget this mere sugarcane patch; I am the true master of this entire earth! Whom then do I need to ask?”
At that moment, the farmer’s guru, an ascetic belonging to the Atit sect, stormed out of the cottage shouting insolently: “O sadhus! Leave this field with your dignity intact, or else your ascetic robes will lose all respect!” Hurling harsh words, he physically pushed the holy men out of the farm. Sadguru Atmanand Swami proclaimed calmly yet decisively: “Now go ahead and press your sugarcane! Forget you, even if your father comes, not a drop of jaggery (gor) will form from this press!” Having uttered these words, the saints walked away and halted at a nearby natural freshwater stream to bathe.
The farmer restarted the press, but by the potency of Atmanand Swami’s words, the squeezed sugarcane juice inexplicably failed to pour into the collection pit! The Atit guru performed various rituals, burnt incense, and in desperate superstition even severed his own tongue and struck it against the wooden press, yet not a single drop of juice flowed into the reservoir! Finally realizing the magnitude of his folly, the Atit guru said to the farmer: “Those sadhus were not ordinary beggars; they were divine, spiritually accomplished personages. We committed a severe transgression against them, which is why the juice refuses to flow. Run immediately, fall at their feet, and bring them back, only then will this press produce jaggery!”
The owner of the farm mounted his horse in haste, raced to the stream, and prostrated before Atmanand Swami holding his own footwear between his teeth in utmost repentance: “You are truly great spiritual beings! Please forgive my terrible insolence and bless my farm with your presence again!” Atmanand Swami replied: “O farmer! We no longer desire sugarcane, but bring a bowl filled with pure ghee (clarified butter), and all shall be set right.” The farmer sprinted back and returned with ample pure ghee, raw jaggery, and fine rice. The sadhus joyfully accepted the offering. At that very moment, the sugarcane juice began flowing freely into the collection vat, and exquisite jaggery was produced!
Witnessing this miraculous grace, the farmer’s dormant spiritual impressions awakened. With folded hands he pleaded, “O holy saint! You have arrived solely to redeem my soul; please stay with us for four and a half months!” Swami consented to stay for one month. The farmer arranged a dedicated room with new cots and bedding, took the spiritual vows of Satsang, and served the saints with immense devotion. Thereafter, Sadguru Atmanand Swami visited the village frequently, gracing the devotees with spiritual nourishment.
