Durlabhram Vipra of Mehemdavad: The Wayward Mare and the Allegory of the Snake Charmer
Accompanied by eight to ten mounted Kathi chieftains including Sura Khachar and Somla Khachar, Shreeji Maharaj was riding toward Vadodara. Traveling in the holy party was Durlabhram, a pious Brahmin devotee from the village of Mehemdavad, riding his personal mare. As they approached a roadside lake, Durlabhram nudged his thirsty mare forward to let her drink before the others. Strangely, the mare stubbornly refused to advance ahead of the chieftains’ horses, resisting every command!
Durlabhram spurred her and pulled the reins repeatedly, yet the mare only balked and stepped backward. Observing Durlabhram’s futile struggle, Shreeji Maharaj turned to Sura Khachar with an amused chuckle: “Behold, Darbars! Between these two, if the mare is stronger, she will not move forward; but if Durlabhram proves stronger, she shall proceed!”
Drawing an insightful spiritual lesson from the incident, Shreehari explained: “The relationship between the jiva (soul) and maya (worldly illusion) is exactly like this rider and his wayward mare. Since time immemorial, the soul has clung affectionately to maya. God incarnates to detach the soul from worldly bondage and lead it directly toward His eternal abode, Akshardham. Yet, anchored by deep-rooted worldly instincts, the soul persistently resists and clings back to the mud of illusion!”
Hearing this, the quick-witted Sura Khachar folded his hands and quipped: “True indeed, Maharaj! But make sure You pull us all the way to the ultimate destination (Akshardham)! Do not leave us abandoned halfway on the road!” Shreehari laughed heartily: “O Sura Khachar! It is Our supreme wish to take every single soul directly to Akshardham! But driven by their innate stubbornness and base tendencies, souls stray off course and tumble endlessly through cycles of birth and death!”
Then, while seated majestically on horseback, Shreeji Maharaj narrated a vivid allegory: “Once, a traveling juggler (madari) set out to cross a river with a goat on a tether, a pet monkey perched on his shoulder, and a wicker basket containing a venomous cobra balanced upon his head. Midstream, where the water ran deep and swift, sudden raindrops began to fall. To shield himself from the rain, the monkey lifted the lid off the snake basket and held it over his head like an umbrella! Falling raindrops struck the sleeping serpent, which hissed fiercely and sprang into the turbulent river. Lunging to retrieve the dangerous snake, the juggler let slip the rope holding the goat! Leaning down frantically to grab the goat, his shoulder tilted and the monkey tumbled into the rushing torrent! Thus, trying frantically to save one after another, all three—snake, goat, and monkey—were swept away in the surging flood! In the exact same manner, the ignorant soul, attempting to juggle conflicting worldly desires, loses grip on virtue, gets entangled in transient attachments, and drowns helplessly in the ocean of maya!”
Deeply moved by this profound allegory, Sura Khachar, Durlabhram Vipra, and all the chieftains bowed their heads, praying to Shreehari for eternal liberation from the treacherous currents of maya.
