Khaiyo Khatri of Mandvi: The Vedantic Debate and the Sweet Water Spring by the Salty Sea
In the port town of Mandvi in Kutch lived Khaiyo Khatri, a prosperous textile dyer and an arrogant scholar of Advaita Vedanta philosophy. Hearing that Bhagwan Swaminarayan had arrived, Khaiyo resolved to expose Him through philosophical debate. Shreehari graciously accepted the intellectual duel.
In the assembly, Shreehari playfully seated Sadguru Brahmanand Swami upon the elevated throne while Himself sitting modestly on the floor among junior monks. When Khaiyo posed complex Vedantic dilemmas, Brahmanand Swami pointed downward: “Our junior monk sitting below shall answer all your queries!” Shreehari delivered such profound, infallible expositions of the Upanishads that Khaiyo was rendered speechless.
Witnessing the radiant countenance of the young ascetic, Khaiyo’s elderly mother called out in the Kutchi dialect: “Khaiya! The one seated on the throne is not Sahjanand; the radiant master sitting humbly below is Sahjanand Himself!” Acknowledging defeat, Khaiyo prostrated at Shreehari’s lotus feet.
The next morning, while walking along the coastal sands after a holy bath in the Arabian Sea, Khaiyo begged for fresh water to quench his burning thirst. Standing right upon the salty shore, Shreeji Maharaj drew a circle in the sand with the big toe of His right foot and instructed His attendants to dig. To everyone’s astonishment, an inexhaustible spring of crystalline, nectar-sweet drinking water gushed forth amidst the briny sea! Sadguru Brahmanand Swami filled a pitcher, offering it first to Maharaj and then to Khaiyo and the assembly. Overcome with reverence, Khaiyo surrendered entirely to the Lord. To this day, the miraculous site is preserved in Mandvi as the sacred pilgrimage shrine ‘Mithi Virdi’.
