The Routing of the Mandavdhar Outlaws and Naja Jogiya’s Night-Blindness Episode

In the village of Mandavdhar near Gadhada, two aggressive Rajput landholders named Jetha and Meraman harbored bitter enmity against Dada Khachar over an ongoing estate dispute. Shielded by the supreme spiritual power of Shri Hari, Dada Khachar remained entirely unassailable. Frustrated, the conspirators plotted: ‘Let us ambush and capture Swaminarayan Himself on the road; then Dada Khachar will easily surrender his lands to secure His release!’ To execute this sinister plot, they gathered armed outlaws in Mandavdhar.

Informed of this treachery, the all-powerful Lord Swaminarayan strapped on His weapons that very night, mounted His mare Manki, and set out towards Mandavdhar accompanied by Bhaguji, Naja Jogiya, and a few trusted warriors (parshads). The night was pitch-black. Naja Jogiya suffered from severe night-blindness (ratandhla), rendering him virtually blind in the dark. Ashamed to admit his impairment, he secretly clutched the tail of Bhaguji’s galloping horse to keep pace. When the horse leapt across a sudden roadside ditch, the tail slipped from his grasp, leaving Naja stranded in the middle of the dark wilderness!

Halting His mare, Shri Hari called out: “Naja! Why have you lagged behind?” Naja fabricated an excuse: “Maharaj! The strap of my footwear snapped, so I am repairing it!” The omniscient Lord chuckled: “Naja! You attempted to hide your weakness out of vanity just like Lumba Kathi, but in the end your secret was exposed all the same!”

As they rode, Shri Hari delightfully narrated the humorous folk tale of Lumba Kathi: “Lumba Kathi was night-blind. Visiting his in-laws’ village for a wedding, complete darkness enveloped his eyes at dusk. To conceal his blindness, he blindly groped along the courtyard wall in the wrong direction; when his mother-in-law asked what he was doing, he boasted, ‘I am admiring the architecture of your house and measuring the walls!’ Sitting down for dinner in the dark veranda, a young buffalo calf wandered up and ate the bread directly from his brass plate! The mother-in-law noticed and handed him a stick, saying, ‘Son-in-law, hold this stick; if the calf approaches again, strike it!’ When the mother-in-law returned carrying a pot of cooked vegetables, Lumba heard the footsteps, mistook her for the calf, and struck her hand with all his might! Screaming in agony, she yelled, ‘Lumba… you struck me, it hurts!’ Hearing the commotion, Lumba panicked, thinking the house was on fire, and shrieked, ‘Mother-in-law, pull me out of the house, I am night-blind and cannot see a thing in the dark!’ Thus, Naja, attempting to mask one’s limitations through deception only results in ultimate public embarrassment!” Hearing this witty parable, the parshads erupted in hearty laughter, banishing all fear into the nocturnal breeze.

Approaching Mandavdhar, Naja anxiously warned: “Maharaj! Jetha and Meraman are fierce, ruthless fighters; it seems certain that we shall be beaten tonight!” Shri Hari laughed: “You are all faint-hearted; wait right here, We shall confront them alone!”

Spurring His mare Manki, Shri Hari charged like lightning into the heart of Mandavdhar. Arriving at the den where Jetha, Meraman, and their armed gang were gathered, Shri Hari unsheathed His gleaming sword, struck the wooden gate, and roared like a lion: “Where are those who boast of capturing Swaminarayan? Step outside!” Beholding Shri Hari’s formidable, awe-inspiring manifestation, the bandits hallucinated that Swaminarayan had arrived with an overwhelming military army! Terrified to the marrow of their bones, Jetha, Meraman, and their entire gang dropped their weapons and fled into the night to save their lives! Bhaguji and the attendants arrived shortly after, celebrating the effortless, bloodless victory of their divine Master.
