Makan Bhatt of Maliya Hatina: Pure Service of Buttermilk and Pickles, and Divine Liberation for the Pious Couple

In the village of Maliya Hatina in Saurashtra stood a vast orchard belonging to the Junagadh mandir. Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami and visiting sadhus frequently graced this garden during their spiritual tours. Sadguru Bhagwandas Swami resided there permanently, providing steady spiritual nourishment to the local fellowship.

Adjoining the temple orchard lived a pious, gentle Brahmin named Makan Bhatt. Although he had not formally taken initiation into the satsang, his past spiritual inclinations drew him irresistibly toward the sadhus. Whenever kathas were conducted, Makan Bhatt sat reverently in the assembly. Beholding the sadhus’ strict adherence to moral vows and total detachment from wealth and lust, he often reflected: “In this age of spiritual darkness, I have never seen such truly unblemished ascetics!” Living next door, he made it a daily practice to send fresh buttermilk and homemade pickles to the sadhus’ kitchen.

Delighted by Makan Bhatt’s pure, selfless service, Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj appeared before him in a brilliant aura of divine light one night while he lay resting on the veranda, and gently awakened him: “O Bhattji! We are exceedingly pleased with your devotion; ask for whatever boon your heart desires!” Overcome with divine ecstasy, Makan Bhatt folded his hands: “O Lord! If You are truly pleased with me, kindly escort me to Your eternal abode of Akshardham on the upcoming Ekadashi!” Shreehari blessed him with the words “So be it!”

Hearing her husband conversing at midnight, his wife stepped out and inquired: “With whom are you conversing at this late hour?” Makan Bhatt replied joyfully: “Behold, Lord Swaminarayan manifested in person and granted me a boon to depart for Akshardham on the coming Ekadashi!” Astonished, she asked: “What great merit earned you such an extraordinary benediction?” Makan Bhatt explained: “It is solely because I sent buttermilk and pickles to His holy sadhus every day!”

The wife innocently protested: “Good heavens! I was the one who churned the buttermilk and prepared those pickles! Why should I be left behind? Pray to the Lord to take me along with you so that we may enter Akshardham together!” Makan Bhatt earnestly prayed to Shreehari, who manifested once again: “O Lord! My wife is eager to accompany me to Your abode; kindly bestow Your grace upon her as well!”

Pleased by their guileless devotion and detachment, Shreeji Maharaj smiled: “Because the Brahmin population in this village is small, We shall not take you both simultaneously. Makan Bhatt shall enter Akshardham on Ekadashi, and his wife shall follow on the auspicious day of Beej (the second day of the new moon)!”

On the sacred day of Ekadashi, Makan Bhatt summoned all the village devotees: “Tonight Lord Shreeji Maharaj is coming to escort me to Akshardham; please sing devotional hymns!” At precisely ten o’clock at night, Shreehari arrived with a radiant celestial chariot and an entourage of liberated souls. Beheld by all present, Makan Bhatt joyfully cast off his mortal frame and ascended to Akshardham.

True to the Lord’s promise, on the day of Beej, Shreehari returned and escorted Makan Bhatt’s pious wife to Akshardham in that same celestial chariot! Through the humble, loving offering of simple buttermilk and pickles, the Supreme Lord liberated both husband and wife eternally.
