The Swing Festival in Mahemdavad and Sadguru Nityanand Swami’s Definitive Theological Discourse on Ultimate Liberation
On one occasion, supreme Lord Swaminarayan arrived at Mahemdavad accompanied by an assembly of sadhus and devotees. At the outskirts of the town beneath the cool canopy of a colossal banyan tree, Shri Hari convened an assembly. The loving devotees of Mahemdavad had suspended a beautifully decorated cot as a festive swing (hindolo) from a sturdy branch, oriented towards the south. Seated upon the swing, Shri Hari swayed gently, bestowing enchanting darshan upon all present. The devotees worshipped Shri Hari with fragrant flower garlands, sandalwood paste, and attar, followed by adoration of the holy sadhus.
While swaying upon the swing, Shri Hari posed a profound theological question before the senior assembly of Sadgurus: “O holy saints! Presently, you all believe that liberation (moksha) is attained through Our direct worship, darshan, and association, and you regard any physical object connected with Us as a sanctified conduit to salvation. But when We are no longer visibly manifest upon this earth, if a seeker meditates (dhyan) upon these exalted liberated saints (muktas), does that meditation bestow ultimate liberation or not? Let the senior saints deliberate deeply and answer!”
The assembly was plunged into contemplation. Shri Hari said: “Let Brahmanand Swami, Nityanand Swami, Atmanand Swami, Krupanand Swami, Krishnanand Swami, and other learned ascetics confer together and arrive at an answer!” The senior sadhus stepped aside and engaged in vigorous discussion. Returning, the resolute Krishnanand Swami answered: “O Maharaj! To meditate upon anyone other than You would be considered unchaste devotion (vyabhicharini bhakti)! For us, You alone are supreme God; why should we meditate upon any other being?” Other saints concurred, yet none could decipher the profound underlying principle of the Lord’s query.
Among them all, Sadguru Nityanand Swami alone comprehended the precise theological essence. Shri Hari called upon him: “Nityanand Swami! You have grasped Our true intent; speak forth!” Nityanand Swami bowed with folded hands and proclaimed with profound scriptural precision: “O Maharaj! Liberation is attained through implicit obedience to the words (vachan) of the great God-realized Saint! The great Satpurush constantly lives in flawless obedience to God’s commandments, unceasingly sings the liberating divine pastimes of the Lord, and reveals the true identity of God incarnate to aspiring souls. Therefore, liberation is attained through the words of the Satpurush!
By obeying the words of Shukadevji, King Parikshit was redeemed; by following the divine words of Sage Narada, Prahlad, Dhruva, Priyavrata, Chitraketu, and the ten thousand sons of Daksha crossed the ocean of worldly existence! By walking along the path illuminated by the Satpurush and worshipping God according to his directives, souls attain eternal redemption! However, meditation (dhyan) upon any saint does not bestow liberation; meditation is reserved exclusively and singularly for the supreme Parabrahman Purushottam Narayan alone, and that is the pristine, eternal hallmark of a true Satpurush!”
Hearing Nityanand Swami’s flawless, philosophically immaculate answer, Shriji Maharaj was filled with boundless delight and declared: “Nityanand Swami has delivered the exact, perfect answer to Our question!” Rising from the swing, Shri Hari took the finest, most fragrant floral garland presented by the devotees and personally placed it around Nityanand Swami’s neck in supreme honor, subsequently garlanding all the sadhus in overflowing divine joy.
