માઢીયા ગામે સવજી ભરવાડનો અત્યંત હિંસક કૂતરો સ્વામિનારાયણના સંતો સામે શાંત રહ્યો પણ દંભી બાવાને કરડ્યો; સાચા સંતોની નિર્દોષ સાધુતા પશુ પણ પારખી શકે છે તે જોઈ ભરવાડ સત્સંગી થયો.
ગોહિલવાડ પંથકના મહુવા તાલુકામાં આવેલા માઢીયા ગામે સદગુરુ અક્ષરાનંદ સ્વામી સંતોના મંડળ સાથે સત્સંગ વિચરણમાં પધાર્યા. ગામમાં મુઠ્ઠીભર હરિભક્તો રહેતા અને એક નાનું છતાં પવિત્ર હરિ મંદિર હતું. સંતો રોજ સવારે અને બપોરે ગામની સીમમાં વહેતી નદીએ સ્નાન કરવા જતા. નદીએ જવા માટે ગામના એક ભરવાડના ફળિયા વચ્ચેથી સાંકડી નવેળી (શેરી)માંથી પસાર થવું પડતું.
આ ફળિયામાં સવજી ગોકળી ભરવાડ રહેતો હતો. તેણે પોતાના ઘેટાં-બકરાં અને પશુધનની રખેવાળી માટે એક અત્યંત કદાવર અને હિંસક કૂતરો પાળેલો હતો. તે શ્વાન એટલો કરડકણો હતો કે શેરીમાંથી નીકળતા અજાણ્યા વટેમાર્ગુઓ પર તૂટી પડતો અને કરડી ખાતો! આથી ગામના લોકો પણ તે શેરીમાંથી પસાર થતાં થથરતા હતા.
પ્રથમ દિવસે જ્યારે અક્ષરાનંદ સ્વામી સંતો સાથે નદીએ સ્નાન કરવા નીકળ્યા, ત્યારે ઓસરીમાં બેઠેલા સવજી ભરવાડે સાદ પાડીને ચેતવ્યા: “એ રામ… રામ, સાધુ મહારાજ! આ નવેળીમાંથી જરા સંભાળીને નીકળજો; મારો કૂતરો બહુ કરડકણો છે, તમને ફાડી ખાશે!” ત્યારે સદગુરુ અક્ષરાનંદ સ્વામીએ નિર્ભયતાથી હસીને કહ્યું, “ભગત! અમે તો ભગવાન સ્વામિનારાયણના નિર્દોષ સાધુ છીએ; તમારો કૂતરો અમને ક્યારેય નહીં કરડે!”
સ્વામી અને સંતો આખા પંદર દિવસ સુધી માઢીયા ગામે રોકાયા. રોજ સવાર-સાંજ સંતો તે જ નવેળીમાંથી શાંતિપૂર્વક નીકળતા. ચમત્કાર એ હતો કે પેલો વિકરાળ કૂતરો સંતોને જોતો ખરો, પણ ક્યારેય તેમના પર ભસ્યો પણ નહીં કે ઊભો પણ ન થયો! સંતોની પવિત્ર આભા અને અહિંસાની શીતળતા પશુને પણ શાંત કરી દેતી હતી.
સંતોના ગયાના થોડા દિવસો પછી દૂધરેજ અખાડાના કેટલાક અહંકારી બાવાઓ ગામમાં આવ્યા અને રામજી મંદિરે ઉતર્યા. તેઓ પણ નદીએ સ્નાન કરવા સારુ તે જ નવેળીમાંથી પસાર થવા લાગ્યા. સવજી ભરવાડે તેમને પણ ચેતવ્યા, “બાવાજી! સંભાળજો, કૂતરો કરડકણો છે!” ત્યારે એક અહંકારી બાવાએ તોછડાઈથી કહ્યું, “સ્વામિનારાયણના મુંડિયા સાધુ નીકળી શકતા હોય તો અમે કેમ ન નીકળીએ?” તે હજુ દસ પગલાં આગળ વધ્યો ત્યાં જ પેલો કૂતરો ધસી આવ્યો અને બાવાના ગળા પર તરાપ મારીને બચકું ભરી લીધું! બાવાજી ચીસો પાડતા માંડ-માંડ જીવ બચાવીને ભાગ્યા.
આ દ્રશ્ય જોઈને સવજી ભરવાડ પોતાની ઓસરીમાં ઊભો-ઊભો હસી પડ્યો અને બોલ્યો, “વાહ મારા કૂતરા વાહ! તું પણ સાચા સંતને ઓળખે છે! પેલા હતા તે સાક્ષાત્ ભગવાનના નિર્દોષ સંતો હતા, અને આ પેટભરુ જગતના સાધુ છે!” સવજી ભરવાડને સ્વામિનારાયણના સંતોની દિવ્ય સાધુતાનો પૂર્ણ નિશ્ચય થયો. તેણે તત્કાળ સંતો પાસે જઈ પંચવર્તમાન ધારણ કર્યા અને આજીવન અનન્ય સત્સંગી બન્યો.

माढिया में अक्षरानंद स्वामी की साधुता का प्रभाव और सवजी भरवाड़ के श्वान की परख
गोहिलवाड़ क्षेत्र के महुवा तहसील स्थित माढिया गाँव में सद्गुरु अक्षरानंद स्वामी संतों के मंडल सहित सत्संग विचरण हेतु पधारे। गाँव में मुट्ठी भर हरिभक्त थे और एक छोटा सा पवित्र मंदिर था। संत नित्य प्रातः और अपराह्न गाँव के समीप बहने वाली नदी में स्नान हेतु जाते थे। नदी जाने के लिए गाँव के एक चरवाहे (भरवाड़) के बाड़े के मध्य से संकरी गली से होकर गुजरना पड़ता था।
उस बाड़े में सवजी भरवाड़ रहता था। उसने अपने पशुओं की रखवाली हेतु एक अत्यंत विशाल और हिंसक कुत्ता पाल रखा था। वह कुत्ता इतना आक्रामक था कि मार्ग से गुजरने वाले किसी भी अपरिचित पर झपटकर काट लेता था। गाँव के लोग भी उस मार्ग से निकलने में भय खाते थे।
पहले दिन जब अक्षरानंद स्वामी संतों के साथ उधर से गुजरे, तो सवजी भरवाड़ ने पुकारकर सावधान किया: “अरे साधु महाराज! इस गली से तनिक संभलकर निकलिएगा; मेरा कुत्ता बहुत हिंसक है, काट खाएगा!” तब सद्गुरु अक्षरानंद स्वामी ने सहज भाव से मुस्कुराकर कहा, “भक्त! हम भगवान स्वामीनारायण के निष्कपट साधु हैं; तुम्हारा कुत्ता हमें कभी नहीं काटेगा!”
संत पूरे पंद्रह दिनों तक माढिया गाँव में रहे। नित्य प्रातः और संध्या संत उसी संकरी गली से शांतिपूर्वक गुजरते थे। आश्चर्य यह था कि वह भयानक कुत्ता संतों को केवल देखता रहता, किंतु उसने कभी उन पर भौंका तक नहीं! संतों के तपोबल और अहिंसा की शीतलता पशु के क्रूर स्वभाव को भी शांत कर देती थी।
संतों के प्रस्थान के कुछ दिनों उपरांत दूधरेंज अखाड़े के कुछ वैरागी बावा गाँव आए। वे भी स्नान हेतु उसी संकरी गली से जाने लगे। सवजी भरवाड़ ने उन्हें भी चेताया, “बावाजी! संभलकर जाइए, कुत्ता बहुत काटता है!” तब एक दंभी बावा ने उपहास में कहा, “जब स्वामीनारायण के साधु निकल सकते हैं, तो हम क्यों नहीं?” वह दस कदम आगे बढ़ा ही था कि कुत्ता गुर्राते हुए झपटा और बावा के कंठ पर प्रहार कर काट लिया! बावाजी चीखते-चिल्लाते किसी प्रकार जान बचाकर भागे।
यह देखकर सवजी भरवाड़ ओसारे में खड़ा-खड़ा हँसकर बोला, “वाह रे मेरे कुत्ते वाह! तू भी सच्चे संतों को पहचानता है! वे जो आए थे, वे साक्षात् भगवान के सच्चे संत थे, और ये केवल वेशधारी सांसारिक साधु हैं!” सवजी भरवाड़ को स्वामीनारायण के संतों की सच्ची साधुता का दृढ़ निश्चय हो गया। उसने तुरंत संतों की शरण में जाकर पंचवर्तमान धारण किए और जीवनपर्यंत निष्ठावान सत्संगी बन गया।

Aksharanand Swami in Madhiya: The Mark of True Sainthood and Savji Bharwad’s Discerning Dog
Sadguru Aksharanand Swami journeyed with a group of sants to the village of Madhiya in the Mahuva taluka of the Gohilwad region. The village had a small fellowship of devotees and a modest temple. Each morning and afternoon, the sants walked to the nearby countryside river for their ablutions. The path to the river wound through a narrow alley running directly through the courtyard of a local shepherd (Bharwad).
Residing in this homestead was Savji Gokli Bharwad, who kept a formidable and ferocious guard dog to protect his flocks. The canine was notoriously aggressive, ferociously attacking and biting any unfamiliar traveler who dared cross the courtyard. Even the local villagers dreaded stepping into that alleyway.
On the first day, as Aksharanand Swami and the sants passed through, Savji shouted a warning from his veranda: “O holy monks! Tread carefully through this lane; my dog is vicious and will tear you apart!” Sadguru Aksharanand Swami smiled serenely and replied, “Brother! We are pure and harmless sadhus of Bhagwan Swaminarayan; your dog will never harm us!”
For fifteen consecutive days, the sants stayed in Madhiya, walking twice daily through the exact same narrow lane. Incredibly, the fierce guard dog would watch the sants pass by with calm eyes, never once growling, barking, or baring its fangs! The sublime aura of saintly purity and universal harmlessness (ahimsa) radiated by the monks subdued even the savage instincts of the beast.
A few days after the sants departed, a group of arrogant wandering ascetics (bawas) from Dudhrej visited the village and stayed at the Ramji temple. Heading out to bathe, they too entered Savji’s alley. Savji cautioned them as usual: “Beware, ascetics! The dog bites fiercely!” One arrogant bawa scoffed dismissively: “If those Swaminarayan monks could walk through, so can we!” He had hardly taken ten steps when the enraged hound lunged, sank its teeth into the ascetic’s neck, and mauled him! Screaming in agony, the bawa barely escaped with his life.
Witnessing the contrast from his porch, Savji Bharwad burst into hearty laughter: “Bravo, my dog, bravo! Even a beast recognizes true spirituality! Those who walked here before were genuine saints of God, whereas these are mere pretenders driven by ego!” Convinced beyond all doubt of the divine sanctity of Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s holy order, Savji approached the sants, accepted the sacred fivefold moral vows (Panch Vartman), and remained a devoted disciple for the rest of his days.
