The Theft of the Kanbi’s Sword in Limbdi and the Critical Importance of Obeying Shreehari’s Instructions
During the devastating famine of Samvat 1869, Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj traveled from Gadhpur to Loya, and from there He arrived in Limbdi accompanied by His valiant attendant Parshad Bhaguji and a few other companions. A Kanbi devotee from the village of Loya also accompanied the entourage. On the eastern outskirts of Limbdi in the potters’ locality (Kumbhar paru), they rested for the night.
Throughout that arduous famine year, Shreehari consistently counseled devotees to safeguard their lives and provisions, advising them to sell jewelry if necessary to secure adequate grain. That evening, Shreehari cautioned everyone: “These are harsh famine times; thieves and robbers abound. Therefore, take turns keeping watch through the night so that no thief plunders us!”
Hearing this, the Kanbi devotee from Loya remarked casually, “Maharaj! We carry no valuables, so what could a thief possibly take from us?” Shreehari laughed gently and warned, “If a thief comes, the very first thing he will steal is your sword! Therefore, remain vigilant and take turns on guard.”
Realizing that whatever Maharaj uttered was bound to happen, the Kanbi grew anxious about his prized sword. Before sleeping, he tied the sword securely to his leg using his turban cloth, confident that any tug would instantly awaken him.
Parshad Bhaguji kept vigilant watch until midnight. Then Shreeji Maharaj arose and told Bhaguji, “Bhaguji, please rest now; We shall keep watch.” Bhaguji went to sleep while Shreehari stood guard.
Presently, a thief stealthily shifted the gate wicket and crept inside. Shreehari immediately alerted Bhaguji: “Bhaguji, wake up! Look, a thief has entered!” At Bhaguji’s prompt shout, the thief vaulted over the fence and fled into the darkness. A short while later, the same thief peeked over the outer wall again.
Shreeji Maharaj observed, “If we fall asleep, the thief will surely return and steal our garments. He refuses to leave us alone; let us saddle the mares and set out on our journey!” Following Maharaj’s command, the companions prepared their horses.
At that moment, the Kanbi from Loya awoke. He untied the sword from his leg, wrapped the cloth around it, leaned it against the wall, and stepped aside to relieve himself! The lurking thief seized the exact moment: he snatched the sword from over the wall and bolted into the night!
The Kanbi yelled frantically, “Bhaguji! Run, the thief has stolen my sword!” Bhaguji roared and gave chase, but the thief melted into the deep darkness of the village alleys.
Thus, because of heedlessness and failing to strictly abide by Shreehari’s warning, the devotee lost his treasured sword. Every command of the Lord is meant solely for the ultimate protection of His devotees.
