જગન્નાથપુરીમાં મોક્ષની શોધમાં ઉપવાસ કરનાર ખરડના ગોવિંદજી વિપ્રને જગન્નાથજીએ ગુજરાતમાં ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી પાસે મોકલ્યા; સ્વામીની શરણાગતિ સ્વીકારી તેમણે અંતકાળે અક્ષરધામ પ્રાપ્ત કર્યું.
ધંધૂકા તાલુકાના ખરડ ગામે ગોવિંદજી વિપ્ર નામે એક પરમ મુમુક્ષુ બ્રાહ્મણ રહેતા હતા. તેઓ ભગવાન શ્રી જગન્નાથજીના પરમ ઉપાસક હતા. તેમણે બે વખત પગપાળા ચાલીને જગન્નાથપુરીની કઠિન યાત્રા કરી પ્રભુનાં દર્શન કર્યાં હતાં. જ્યારે ત્રીજી વખત તેઓ પુરી પહોંચ્યા, ત્યારે તેમના મનમાં તીવ્ર સંશય થયો: “શું મારું આત્યંતિક કલ્યાણ થશે ખરું? મારે પ્રભુની કસોટી કરવી છે!”
આવો સંકલ્પ કરી તેઓ જગન્નાથજીના મુખ્ય મંદિરના ધાબા પર અન્ન-જળના ત્યાગ સાથે આમરણ ઉપવાસનું વ્રત લઈને બેસી ગયા. બે દિવસ વીત્યા એટલે સાક્ષાત્ જગન્નાથ પ્રભુ એક વૃદ્ધ તેજોમય બ્રાહ્મણનું રૂપ ધરી, હાથમાં લાકડી ટેકવીને ગોવિંદજી પાસે આવ્યા અને બોલ્યા, “હે ગોવિંદજી! જો તારે તારું આત્યંતિક કલ્યાણ કરવું હોય, તો હાલ ભૂતળ પર પ્રગટ પૂર્ણપુરુષોત્તમ નારાયણના પરમ એકાંતિક સંત ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી તારા ગુજરાતમાં જ બિરાજે છે! તેમનાં દર્શન કર અને તેમનો આશરો લે, તારું કલ્યાણ તેઓ કરશે! વ્યર્થ સંશય ત્યજી દે!”
ગોવિંદજીએ અચરજ પામી પૂછ્યું, “આપ કોણ છો અને મને આ વાતનો ભરોસો કેમ બેસે?” વૃદ્ધ બ્રાહ્મણે કહ્યું, “હું સ્વયં જગન્નાથજી છું! ચાલ મારી સાથે ગર્ભગૃહમાં; હું હમણાં જ મૂર્તિમાં સમાઈ જાઉં ત્યારે મારી વાત સત્ય માનજે! અને જ્યારે તું ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીને મળીશ ત્યારે તેઓ સામેથી તને આ વાત કહીને પૂર્ણ વિશ્વાસ અપાવશે!” ગોવિંદજી ગર્ભગૃહમાં આવ્યા અને પેલું વૃદ્ધ સ્વરૂપ જગન્નાથજીની દિવ્ય મૂર્તિમાં લીન થઈ ગયું! ગોવિંદજીએ ઉપવાસનું પારણું કર્યું અને સ્વગૃહે ખરડ પાછા ફર્યા.
ગામના સ્વામિનારાયણ સત્સંગીઓને તેમણે પૂછ્યું કે તમારા સંપ્રદાયમાં ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી નામે કોઈ સંત છે? હરિભક્તોએ કહ્યું કે તેઓ તો સર્વશ્રેષ્ઠ સમર્થ સદગુરુ છે. ગોવિંદજીએ મનની વાત ગુપ્ત રાખી અને કહ્યું કે જ્યારે તેઓ આવે ત્યારે મને દર્શન કરાવજો.
બે-ત્રણ વર્ષ પછી સદગુરુ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામી બોટાદના અગ્રણી ભક્ત ભગા દોશી સાથે બળદગાડામાં બેસી ખરડ ગામની ભાગોળેથી પસાર થતા હતા. હરિભક્તોના આગ્રહથી સ્વામીએ ગામમાં સત્સંગ સભા કરી. પરંતુ ઉત્સાહમાં હરિભક્તો વૃદ્ધ ગોવિંદજીને જાણ કરવાનું ભૂલી ગયા! જ્યારે સ્વામી ગાડામાં બેસી રવાના થઈ ગયા ત્યારે ગોવિંદજીને ખબર પડી. તેઓ પોતાના ભત્રીજા દામોદર અને બેચરનો હાથ પકડી લાકડી ટેકવતા દોડ્યા! આઘેથી ગાડાને જતું જોઈ ગોવિંદજીએ મોટેથી પોકાર કર્યો: “એ ગોપાળાનંદ, ઊભો રહે! એ ગોપાળાનંદ, ઊભો રહે!”
ગાડામાં બેઠેલા ભગા દોશીએ કહ્યું, “સ્વામી! પેલો વૃદ્ધ બ્રાહ્મણ આપને નામ લઈને બૂમો પાડે છે!” ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીએ હસીને કહ્યું, “દોશી! એ તો ત્રણ-ત્રણ વખત છેક જગન્નાથપુરી જઈ આવ્યો છે, એના પગમાં ઘણું બળ છે, હમણાં આપણને પહોંચી જશે!” ગાડું ઊભું રહ્યું. ગોવિંદજીએ દોડીને સ્વામીના ચરણ પકડી લીધા. અંતર્યામી સ્વામીએ હસીને કહ્યું, “ગોવિંદજી! ત્રણ-ત્રણ વખત પુરી ગયો છતાં સંશય ન ટળ્યો, એટલે ઠાકોરજીએ મંદિરના ધાબે આવીને મારી પાસે મોકલ્યો ને?”
આ સાંભળતાં જ ગોવિંદજીની આંખોમાંથી અશ્રુધારા વહી નીકળી. જગન્નાથજીનું વચન અક્ષરશઃ સાચું પડ્યું! સ્વામીએ કંઠી પહેરાવી રોજ ‘સ્વામિનારાયણ… સ્વામિનારાયણ’ નામની પાંચ માળા ફેરવવાનો નિયમ આપ્યો. ગોવિંદજી બોલ્યા, “સ્વામી! હું તો બીજા કોઈને ન ઓળખું, હું તો ‘ગોપાળાનંદ… ગોપાળાનંદ’ નામની માળા જ ફેરવીશ!” સ્વામીએ સમજાવ્યા કે ભજન તો ઈષ્ટદેવ સ્વામિનારાયણનું જ થાય; પરંતુ ગોવિંદજીનો સ્વામી પર એવો નિર્દોષ ભાવ હતો કે તેઓ રોજ ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીના નામે જ માળા ફેરવતા!
અંતકાળ આવ્યો ત્યારે ગોવિંદજીના પુત્રો તેમને ભૂમિ પર લેવાની તૈયારી કરતા હતા. ગોવિંદજીએ કહ્યું, “હજુ મને જવાની વાર છે, મારો ગોપાળાનંદ હજુ તેડવા આવ્યો નથી!” થોડી વારમાં ગોવિંદજી અચાનક બેઠા થઈ ગયા અને બોલ્યા, “છોકરાઓ! ઘીનો દીવો પ્રગટાવો! જો, મારો ગોપાળાનંદ સાક્ષાત્ ભગવાન સ્વામિનારાયણ સાથે મને તેડવા પધાર્યા છે! ભલે ગોપાળાનંદ ભલે, તું મને આપેલું વચન પાળીને તેડવા આવ્યો ખરો!” પ્રભુ અને સ્વામી સાથે તેઓ દિવ્ય વિમાનમાં બેસી અક્ષરધામ સિધાવ્યા.

खरड के गोविंदजी विप्र की जगन्नाथ परीक्षा और गोपालनंद स्वामी द्वारा परम मोक्ष
धंधूका तहसील के खरड गाँव में गोविंदजी विप्र नामक एक मुमुक्षु ब्राह्मण रहते थे। वे भगवान श्री जगन्नाथजी के अनन्य उपासक थे। उन्होंने दो बार पैदल जगन्नाथपुरी की अत्यंत दुर्गम यात्रा कर प्रभु के दर्शन किए थे। जब वे तीसरी बार पुरी पहुंचे, तो उनके मन में संशय उत्पन्न हुआ: “क्या मेरा मोक्ष होगा? मुझे प्रभु की परीक्षा लेनी चाहिए!”
इस संकल्प के साथ वे जगन्नाथजी के मुख्य मंदिर की छत पर अन्न-जल त्यागकर अनशन व्रत लेकर बैठ गए। दो दिन बीतने पर साक्षात् जगन्नाथ प्रभु एक वृद्ध ब्राह्मण का रूप धारण कर, हाथ में लाठी लिए उनके समक्ष प्रकट हुए और बोले, “हे गोविंदजी! यदि तुम अपना आत्यंतिक कल्याण चाहते हो, तो वर्तमान में भूतल पर प्रकट पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम भगवान के परम एकांतिक संत गोपालनंद स्वामी तुम्हारे गुजरात में ही विराजमान हैं! उनके दर्शन करो और उनकी शरण लो; वे तुम्हारा मोक्ष करेंगे! व्यर्थ संशय त्याग दो!”
गोविंदजी ने आश्चर्य से पूछा, “आप कौन हैं और मुझे इस पर विश्वास कैसे हो?” वृद्ध ब्राह्मण ने कहा, “मैं स्वयं जगन्नाथ हूँ! गर्भगृह में मेरे पीछे आओ; मैं अभी मूर्ति में समाहित हो जाऊँगा! और जब तुम गोपालनंद स्वामी से मिलोगे, तो वे स्वयं तुम्हें यह घटना स्मरण कराकर पूर्ण विश्वास दिलाएंगे!” गोविंदजी गर्भगृह में आए और वह वृद्ध स्वरूप जगन्नाथजी की काष्ठ मूर्ति में विलीन हो गया! गोविंदजी ने व्रत का पारणा किया और खरड लौट आए।
गाँव के सत्संगियों से उन्होंने गोपालनंद स्वामी के विषय में पूछा। भक्तों ने बताया कि वे तो हमारे संप्रदाय के सर्वोच्च समर्थ संत हैं। गोविंदजी ने अपनी बात गुप्त रखी और कहा कि जब वे पधारें तो मुझे अवश्य दर्शन कराना।
दो-तीन वर्ष पश्चात सद्गुरु गोपालनंद स्वामी बोटाद के प्रमुख भक्त भगा दोशी के साथ बैलगाड़ी में बैठकर खरड गाँव की सीमा से गुजरे। भक्तों के आग्रह पर स्वामी गाँव में पधारे और कथा की। किंतु उल्लास में भक्तगण वृद्ध गोविंदजी को सूचित करना भूल गए! जब स्वामी प्रस्थान कर चुके थे, तब गोविंदजी को ज्ञात हुआ। वे लाठी टेकते हुए दौड़े और दूर से जाती बैलगाड़ी देखकर पुकारा: “अरे गोपालनंद, रुक! अरे गोपालनंद, रुक जा!”
गाड़ी में बैठे भगा दोशी ने कहा, “स्वामी! वह वृद्ध ब्राह्मण आपका नाम लेकर पुकार रहा है!” गोपालनंद स्वामी ने हंसकर कहा, “दोशी! वह तीन बार जगन्नाथपुरी तक पैदल जा चुका है, उसके पैरों में बहुत बल है, वह अभी पहुँच जाएगा!” गाड़ी रुकते ही गोविंदजी ने दौड़कर स्वामी के चरण पकड़ लिए। अंतर्यामी स्वामी ने मुस्कुराकर कहा, “गोविंदजी! तीन बार पुरी जाने पर भी संशय दूर नहीं हुआ, इसलिए जगन्नाथजी ने मंदिर की छत पर आकर मेरे पास भेजा न?”
यह सुनते ही गोविंदजी की आँखों से प्रेमाश्रुओं की धारा बह निकली। जगन्नाथजी की वाणी अक्षरशः सत्य सिद्ध हुई! स्वामी ने कंठी पहनाकर ‘स्वामीनारायण… स्वामीनारायण’ नाम की पाँच माला फेरने का नियम दिया। गोविंदजी बोले, “स्वामी! मैं अन्य किसी को नहीं जानता; मैं तो ‘गोपालनंद… गोपालनंद’ नाम की ही माला फेरूंगा!” स्वामी के समझाने पर भी उनका स्वामी के प्रति ऐसा अनन्य वात्सल्य था कि वे नित्य गोपालनंद के नाम से ही माला जपते रहे!
जब उनका अंतिम समय आया, तो परिजनों ने उन्हें भूमि पर शयन कराने का प्रयास किया। गोविंदजी ने कहा, “अभी रुक जाओ, मेरा गोपालनंद मुझे लेने नहीं आया!” कुछ ही क्षणों में वे सहसा उठकर बैठ गए और बोले, “पुत्रो! घी का दीपक जलाओ! देखो, मेरा गोपालनंद साक्षात् भगवान स्वामीनारायण के साथ दिव्य विमान लेकर मुझे लेने आ गया है!” प्रभु और स्वामी के साथ वे दिव्य स्वरूप धारण कर अक्षरधाम सिधार गए।

Govindji Vipra of Kharad: Jagannathji’s Test and Final Redemption by Gopalanand Swami
In the village of Kharad in Dhandhuka taluka lived Govindji Vipra, an ardent and devout Brahmin pilgrim deeply devoted to Bhagwan Shree Jagannathji. Twice he had undertaken the arduous pedestrian pilgrimage across India to Puri to behold the Lord. Yet upon reaching Puri for the third time, deep existential doubt assailed his mind: “Will my ultimate liberation ever be realized? I must test the Lord Himself!”
Resolving to fast unto death, Govindji sat in austere prayer on the terrace of the grand Jagannath temple, forsaking all food and water. On the second day of his fast, Bhagwan Jagannathji Himself appeared before him disguised as a luminous elderly Brahmin leaning upon a wooden staff. The divine elder said, “O Govindji! If you truly seek ultimate liberation, know that Sadguru Gopalanand Swami—the exalted, supreme paramhansa of Purna Purushottam Bhagwan manifest on earth—resides in your own native Gujarat! Seek his darshan and take refuge under him; he shall grant you eternal salvation! Renounce your idle doubts!”
Astonished, Govindji asked, “Who are you, and how may I be convinced of your words?” The elder replied, “I am Jagannath Himself! Follow me into the sanctum sanctorum; behold as I merge back into the sacred wooden deity! Furthermore, when you meet Gopalanand Swami, he will proactively disclose this secret encounter to you!” Following the old Brahmin inside, Govindji watched in awe as the figure vanished seamlessly into the deity of Lord Jagannath! Convinced, Govindji broke his fast and returned home to Kharad.
He inquired of local Swaminarayan devotees whether a monk named Gopalanand Swami existed. The devotees replied that he was indeed the foremost leader of the holy order. Keeping his divine encounter secret, Govindji simply requested to be informed whenever the Swami visited the village.
Two or three years later, Sadguru Gopalanand Swami passed by the outskirts of Kharad in a bullock cart accompanied by the prominent merchant Bhaga Doshi of Botad. Yielding to devotees’ entreaties, Swami entered the village and conducted an uplifting spiritual assembly. In their celebratory excitement, however, the devotees forgot to alert the elderly Govindji! Learning of the visit only as Swami’s cart was already rumbling away into the distance, Govindji grabbed his walking stick and sprinted across the fields with his nephews. Catching sight of the cart, the old Brahmin cried out at the top of his lungs: “O Gopalanand, stop! Hey Gopalanand, halt!”
Hearing the shout, Bhaga Doshi said, “Swami, an old man is running after us calling your name!” Gopalanand Swami chuckled, “Doshi! That man has walked three times all the way to Jagannath Puri; his legs have plenty of strength, he will catch up in no time!” As the cart halted, Govindji reached it out of breath and grasped Swami’s holy feet. The omniscient Swami smiled gently: “Govindji! Even after walking three times to Jagannath Puri, your doubts refused to vanish, so Thakorji had to visit you on the temple terrace to send you to me, didn’t He?”
Tears of boundless joy streamed down Govindji’s face; every word of Lord Jagannath was vindicated! Swami placed a kanthi around his neck and instructed him to chant five rosaries of ‘Swaminarayan’ daily. Govindji replied candidly: “Swami! I know no one else; I shall only chant ‘Gopalanand… Gopalanand’!” Despite Swami explaining that worship belongs solely to Bhagwan Swaminarayan, Govindji’s pure, childlike affection for Swami was so steadfast that he spent the rest of his life joyfully repeating the name of Gopalanand Swami on his rosary.
When his final hour arrived, his sons prepared to place him upon the floor according to Hindu tradition. Govindji cautioned them, “Wait! My departure is not yet due; my Gopalanand has not yet arrived to escort me!” Moments later, his eyes widened with celestial wonder and he sat up with vigor: “Light the sacred ghee lamp! Behold, my Gopalanand has arrived in a celestial chariot alongside Bhagwan Swaminarayan to take me home! Thank you, Gopalanand, for honoring your word!” Ascending the divine chariot, Govindji departed peacefully for the eternal abode of Akshardham.
