Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami’s Exemplary Simplicity in Khambhat and His Spiritual Discourse with the Nawab

Every year, Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami journeyed to Vadtal to celebrate the auspicious Chaitri and Kartiki festivals. There, in spiritual unison with Sadguru Gopalanand Swami, Acharya Shri Raghuvirji Maharaj, and the senior fellowship, he showered boundless nectar through elevating spiritual discourses.

On one occasion, Ambavidas Patel and other leading devotees from Khambhat attended the Vadtal gathering and submitted a heartfelt request: “O Swami! On your journey back to Junagadh, please grace our historic town of Khambhat with your presence!” Moved by their sincere affection, Swami consented. Overjoyed at his impending arrival, the Khambhat devotees secured special permission from the local Muslim Nawab of Khambhat to borrow his opulent royal chariot for a magnificent welcoming procession.

When Swami reached the outskirts of Khambhat, the devotees enthusiastically requested him to ascend the grand, gilded chariot. The moment Swami beheld the extravagant carriage, he firmly refused: “Devotees! We are renunciant sadhus; such regal pomp and worldly opulence do not befit an ascetic! Bhagwan Swaminarayan has strictly commanded us to shun ostentation; therefore, we shall never sit in it!” The devotees pleaded anxiously: “Swami! With great difficulty we persuaded the Nawab to lend us this royal chariot; if he learns that you rejected it, he will take grave offense!” Undaunted, Gunatitanand Swami declared fearlessly: “Devotees! Should we worry about displeasing the petty Nawab of this earthly town, or should we worry about displeasing the supreme Nawab of infinite cosmic realms, Lord Swaminarayan Himself?” Silenced by Swami’s unshakeable spiritual integrity, the devotees relented. Swami took his seat in a humble, ordinary wooden cart, and the procession entered the city.

The citizens of Khambhat had frequently witnessed affluent, showy monks parading through the bazaars; but when they beheld this genuine ascetic—clothed in a simple patched quilt, radiant with penance and sublime detachment—waves of spiritual peace swept over their hearts. News swiftly reached the Nawab that an extraordinary ascetic had arrived who had refused even the ruler’s royal chariot! The Nawab inquired of his Prime Minister (Vazir): “Who is this transcendent holy man?” The Vazir replied: “He is Sadguru Gunatitanand Swami, the revered Mahant of the Junagadh Swaminarayan mandir!” The Nawab immediately dispatched word: “Tomorrow morning, I shall personally visit to seek the divine sight (didar) of this saint.”

The next morning, the Nawab arrived. Beholding Swami seated peacefully upon an old torn quilt, illuminated by a celestial aura of divine tranquility, the ruler was deeply awed! Quoting verses and traditions (hadiths) from the Holy Quran, Swami imparted profound spiritual counsel: “O Nawab! This mortal life is transient like moonlight lasting merely four days. None knows when death will strike at the door. For every single deed committed in this world, an exact account must be rendered before Almighty God. Therefore, perform noble deeds, refrain from sin, and dedicate your soul to the remembrance of God!”

Penetrated to the core by Swami’s fearless and truthful words, the Nawab bowed with folded hands: “O holy Saint! Keep your benevolent grace upon me!” Delighted and transformed, the Nawab departed. Turning to the devotees, Gunatitanand Swami imparted an enduring lesson: “You feared that the local Nawab would be offended; look how deeply pleased he was! Always remember that the supreme Emperor of all cosmos is Bhagwan Swaminarayan; if we displease the Supreme Master in an effort to appease a worldly ruler, our spiritual foundation is entirely ruined!”
