Fulfillment of Panchibai’s Sacred Desires in Junagadh: The Copper Tub, Pitambar, and Gold Ring
Yielding to the devout prayers of Muktaraj Jinabhai, Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj arrived in Junagadh. Throughout the city, Shreehari revealed His divine majesty, awakening deep spiritual conviction in earnest seekers.
Panchibai, the elderly mother of Nagar Sheth Rupshankar, formed a rigorous mental test in her heart: “Everyone proclaims Swaminarayan is the manifest Supreme God; if He is truly omniscient, let Him arrive at my house tomorrow at noon uninvited, request a new water vessel, bathe in hot water using a brand-new copper tub (trambakundi), wear the new silk pitambar stored inside my wooden chest, dine to His heart’s content, and finally ask for the hundred-rupee gold ring (vendh) from the chest—only then will I acknowledge Him as God!” She shared this test with a close friend, who independently wished that Maharaj would knock on her bolted gate and drink sweetened milk from her hands.
Omniscient Shreehari knew their innermost thoughts! The next morning, Maharaj instructed Mulji Brahmachari: “Brahmachari! Do not coat the cooking pots with mud today; we are dining in the town, for an invitation arrived in My heart last night. Follow Me, and I shall guide you to the house!”
At noon, Shreehari led Brahmachari into the town. Reaching the friend’s bolted residence, Shreehari knocked on the wooden wicket and called: “Open the gate, mother! Bring the pot of sweetened milk you have prepared for Us!” Drinking the sanctified milk, Maharaj fulfilled her unspoken wish.
Proceeding onward, Shreehari arrived unannounced at Panchibai’s courtyard and seated Himself upon the cot. Turning to her, Maharaj said, “Panchibai! It is ten o’clock; bring the new vessel, prepare warm water in the new copper tub, and bring the new pitambar from your chest so that We may bathe and dress!”
Panchibai stood frozen in astonishment! Maharaj bathed in the copper tub, donned the silk pitambar, and sat down to dine. After tasting a few morsels, Maharaj paused. When Panchibai lovingly implored Him to eat more, Shreehari smiled playfully: “We shall gladly finish the entire meal, provided you open your chest and give Us the hundred-rupee gold ring kept inside!”
Hurrying to her wooden chest, Panchibai retrieved the gold ring and reverently slipped it onto Shreehari’s sacred finger. Having witnessed every secret condition fulfilled to perfection, her heart surrendered in total conviction. Shreehari then partook of the meal with relish.
Seated upon the cot afterwards, Shreehari said, “Panchibai! We are exceedingly pleased with your devotion today; ask for any boon you desire!” Panchibai prayed with folded hands: “O Lord! Grant that this firm conviction in Your divine nature remains eternal in my heart, and please grant eternal liberation in Akshardham to my four departed sons!”
Shreeji Maharaj smiled graciously and bestowed His supreme benediction: “Panchibai! Not only your four sons, but We grant eternal salvation to twenty-one generations of your entire lineage!”
