Kadia Odha and Uka of Jamnagar: The Ekadashi Food Offering and Shrihari Awakening to Narsinh Mehta’s Devotional Hymn

In Jamnagar lived three exceptionally humble mason devotees named Odhabhai, Ukabhai, and Bhanabhai. Though economically impoverished, they were spiritually wealthy, possessing pure, childlike affection for Bhagwan Swaminarayan.

They undertook an arduous 200-kilometer pilgrimage on foot to Gadhpur across perilous wild terrain. Arriving at Dada Khachar’s court, each pooled half a rupee, raising one and a half silver rupees, and requested Mulji Brahmachari to prepare a food offering (thal) for Shreeji Maharaj. Even though it was the sacred fasting day of Ekadashi, Maharaj graciously consented, and the meal was lovingly prepared.

However, manifesting an enigmatic human pastime, when the meal was ready, Shrihari declined to eat and retired to sleep inside the Akshar Ordi, pulling a quilt over His face! Devastated that their offering was rejected, the three simple masons sat outside the open door in tears. Bhanabhai began singing the poignant devotional hymn of saint-poet Narsinh Mehta in a voice choked with emotion: “Thou hast not understood my destitution, O Shamalia! While I weep in sorrow, Thou sleepest covered beneath Thy quilt…!”

Hearing the heart-wrenching plea of His guileless devotees, the Lord of Compassion could sleep no longer! Rising instantly, Shrihari called out, “Bring the food! Bring the food! We cannot possibly refuse the loving offering of these pure souls!” Sitting upon the veranda, Shreeji Maharaj relished the thal with boundless joy and personally distributed sanctified morsels to all three mason devotees with His own hands.

Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami celebrated the devotion of these Jamnagar devotees in verse 22 of chapter 116 of the sacred Bhakta Chintamani.
