Transformation of the King of Ghodasar: Brahmanand Swami’s ‘Ratnamala’ and 100,000 Bhil Warriors Guarding the Dabhan Yagna
The ruler of Ghodasar in the Charotar region commanded a formidable warrior army of nearly one hundred thousand combat-ready Bhil archers. However, the king was notoriously debauched, tyrannical, and unrestrained in vice. Bedecked in opulent brocaded robes and jewels, he sat daily by the public village well with depraved companions, shamelessly harassing women drawing water. At his palace gates, debauched gatherings revolved around heavy consumption of opium, cannabis, and liquor, driving his terrified subjects into profound despair.
Around that time, Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj was organizing the monumental Vishnu-yag at Dabhan. To arrange necessary provisions, ghee, and logistics, Shreehari dispatched Sadguru Brahmanand Swami ahead of time. Learning of the king’s egregious tyranny and moral degradation, the compassionate saintly heart of Brahmanand Swami was deeply moved.
Swami immediately arrived in Ghodasar. Waiting until the well was clear of women, he bathed and sent word through royal guards requesting an audience. On the first day, Swami discoursed eloquently upon the transience of mortal life, but the indulgence-dulled king remained unaffected.
Undeterred, Brahmanand Swami stayed awake through the night composing an extraordinary 30-stanza philosophical masterpiece titled ‘Ratnamala’ in the resonant Jhulna meter. Returning to the royal court the next day, Swami delivered a searing poetic broadside against the king’s shameful behavior, singing with lion-like thunder: “Sitting by the well, you gawk at water-bearing women! Day and night lost in fleeting illusion, revelling in filthy pursuits! Your mind is fractured, wallowing in wretched scandal! Brahmanand says: Though this truth stings, your face reflects a consumer of degradation!”
Swami proclaimed with trembling authority: “O King! When the ruthless hand of death strikes tomorrow, your armies, royal robes, and pride will crumble into worthless dust! In the boiling cauldrons of Yamapuri, you will render an accounting for every single vile deed down to the last penny! You will wander for endless aeons as a worm in filth through eighty-four lakh species! This precious human birth was bestowed for divine devotion, not to wallow in disgraceful sins!”
Brahmanand Swami’s piercing verses struck the king’s conscience like lightning! His dormant spiritual merits of past lives awakened instantaneously. Shaking with remorse, the king stepped down from his royal throne, collapsed into the dust at Swami’s feet, and wept uncontrollably: “O divine saint! I am the vilest of sinners; rescue me from the fires of hell!” Confessing every dark deed with complete transparency, he pleaded for redemption. Brahmanand Swami placed a sacred kanthi around his neck, administered the five moral vows, and permanently liberated the king from alcohol, opium, meat, and illicit lust, transforming him into a devoted Vaishnav.
When Shreeji Maharaj commenced the magnificent yajna at Dabhan, the Lord personally graced Ghodasar. The reformed king welcomed Shreehari into his palace with supreme reverence. Furthermore, to protect the holy yajna and pilgrims from harassment by rogue armed ascetics (Vairagi bawas), the king deployed his entire army of 100,000 bow-and-arrow Bhil warriors to maintain vigilant 24-hour guard around the Dabhan perimeter! Under their impenetrable protection, the sacred yajna was celebrated with unparalleled majesty.
Acharya Viharilalji Maharaj has recorded this magnificent historical transformation in detail within the sacred epic ‘Shri Hari Lilamrut’.
