The Grand Annakut Festival in Gadhada: Shri Hari and Sadhus Serving the Feast, Playful Banter with Sura Khachar, and the Discourse on Bhagavata Dharma

On one grand occasion, a vast congregation of sadhus and devotees assembled in Gadhada. Shri Hari was seated upon an elevated seat in the assembly, and the senior paramhansas worshipped Him with supreme devotion, recognizing Him as the ultimate source of all incarnations (sarva-avatari). On this festive occasion, a grand Annakut festival was celebrated in the Darbargadh.

Laduba said to Motiba: “Offer the magnificent feast (thal) to your personal worshipped murti of Harikrishna Maharaj.” Motiba lovingly placed an array of delectable sweets and savory delicacies before the deity and prayed. Shri Hari manifested directly within the murti and began partaking of the food. When He stood up after eating only a little, Motiba lovingly scolded Him: “O Lord! Why have You eaten so sparingly? Relinquish this childhood habit and eat to Your heart’s content!” Yielding to her maternal affection, Shri Hari sat down again and relished the preparations, praising each dish: “Not even the finest confectioner in this world could ever prepare delicacies of such heavenly flavor!”

Afterward, the paramhansas sat in long rows across the courtyard for the feast. Muktanand Swami, Nityanand Swami, Anandanand Swami, and Shukmuni served the food with great skill. The large-bodied Brahmamuni, unused to serving, would serve one sadhu and inadvertently skip the next! Shri Hari playfully watched and corrected his steps. The meditative Swayamprakashanand Swami seemed half-absorbed in trance while serving, while the frail Atmanand Swami skillfully served fried lentil dumplings (vadas). Shri Hari Himself stepped into the rows, filling the sadhus’ leaf-plates with jalebis, motaiya laddoos, and rich milk pudding (dudhpak), generously ladling pure ghee over everything! Shri Hari joyfully declared: “Nowhere in creation can such selfless servers be found, nor do such pure, desireless dining saints exist anywhere in the fourteen cosmic realms!”

Following the sadhus, the Rajput chieftains—Dada Khachar, Sura Khachar, Somla Khachar, Matra Dhadhal, Naja Jogiya, and others—sat down to eat. Shri Hari personally stepped forward to serve them. Sura Khachar had already finished eating, yet Shri Hari scooped up a massive mound of jalebis and placed it onto his plate! Sura Khachar exclaimed with his trademark wit: “Maharaj! If I eat this mountain of jalebis, consider Suro dead and gone!” Waving a hand-fan behind Shri Hari, Brahmamuni quipped with hearty humor: “Darbar! Worry not! The body is merely made of five transient elements, while the soul is immortal; therefore, have no fear of your stomach bursting!” Hearing this, the entire assembly erupted in joyous laughter.

After the feast, Shri Hari presided over a spiritual assembly beneath the sacred neem tree, illuminating the true philosophical definition of ‘Satsang’: “You are all celebrated as Satsangis; therefore, engrave the true meaning of Satsang deeply into your souls. First is God Himself (Bhagwan); second is the God-realized Saint (Sant); third is righteous duty (Dharma); and fourth are the revealed scriptures (Shastra) that expound these three! These four are eternal Truth (Sat). To associate with these four through mind, speech, and action is the true essence of ‘Satsang’! This is none other than the pristine Bhagavata Dharma expounded by Lord Nara-Narayana in the Eleventh Canto of the Shrimad Bhagavatam!”
