Kesarmian’s Unyielding Faith at Dhrangadhra, Bhanji Mehta’s Test, and the Gold Necklace Bestowed by Shreehari
Kesarmian, a courageous Muslim soldier stationed in Wadhwan, was an extraordinarily devoted and unshakeable disciple of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan. On one occasion, he accompanied Bhanji Mehta, the chief administrator (karbhari) of Wadhwan, to Dhrangadhra. In the royal court, Bhanji Mehta maliciously instigated a courtier to utter vile abuses against Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
Hearing his beloved Ishtadev publicly insulted, Kesarmian was incensed with righteous indignation. Stepping forward boldly, he rebuked the slanderer in the open assembly. Bhanji Mehta threatened him sharply: “Kesarmian! Renounce your allegiance to Swaminarayan, or you will be summarily dismissed from your post!” Kesarmian replied with heroic fearlessness: “Mehtaji! You may dismiss me this very second; I would rather beg for a living than ever tolerate disrespect toward my Ishtadev Bhagwan Swaminarayan!” Bhanji Mehta dismissed him on the spot.
Sometime later, bandits raided a merchant wedding party. Dispatched from Wadhwan to repel the outlaws, Kesarmian and his fellow cavalrymen fought off the raiders and safely escorted the entourage past Gadhpur. On their return journey, they passed through Gadhpur. His comrades teased: “Kesarmian! Here is Gadhpur where your Swaminarayan resides; will you go to visit him?” Kesarmian replied: “Without doubt! You too should come to behold the manifest Lord.”
A playful comrade laid down a challenge: “Kesarmian! You claim Swaminarayan is God; if He truly is God, let Him remove the gold necklace (utari) from His own neck and place it around yours the moment you arrive—only then shall we accept Him as God!” Kesarmian responded with serene certainty: “He is indeed the Supreme Lord incarnate; if that is your condition, He will surely adorn me with His gold necklace!”
They rode into Dada Khachar’s courtyard. Presiding under the sacred neem tree, adorned in pristine white garments, a triple-plumed turban, and fragrant garlands, Shreeji Maharaj shone like the radiant full moon. Sensing their arrival, Shreehari rose from His cot and called out: “Clear a pathway through the assembly, and let Our devoted Kesarmian come forward!”
The cavalrymen dismounted. The moment Kesarmian beheld his beloved Lord, he fell flat upon the ground like a prostrate staff. Shreehari lifted him up, embracing him with boundless affection. Then, without a word from anyone, omniscient Shreehari removed the radiant gold necklace from His own neck and lovingly fastened it around Kesarmian’s neck! He then garlanded him with flowers and graciously welcomed the accompanying riders. Awestruck by this indisputable proof of omniscience, the skeptical riders bowed in deep reverence.
Shreehari enquired: “Kesarmian, why did Bhanji Mehta dismiss you from service?” Kesarmian recounted the entire episode. Maharaj asked, “Without your salary, how would you have sustained your family?” Kesarmian replied, “Maharaj, I would have begged for crumbs from door to door, but how could I ever tolerate blasphemy against my Lord?”
Profoundly moved by his valor and unswerving loyalty, Shreehari patted his back: “Kesarmian! We are immensely pleased with you; ask for any boon you desire!” Kesarmian answered: “O Lord, having attained You manifest, no worldly desire remains. I ask only this: whenever anyone passes away in my family, let no messengers of Yamaraj approach them, but may You personally come to guide their soul to Your eternal abode!” Shreeji Maharaj placed His sanctifying hand upon Kesarmian’s head and granted this immortal boon.
