Harkhchand Vanik of Devada: Steadfast Devotion and the Inexhaustible Granary in the Great Famine
In the winter of Samvat 1868, Shreehari was journeying through northern Gujarat, passing near the village of Devada in Visnagar taluka to grace the devotees. He was accompanied on horseback by eight to ten Kathi chieftains, including Sura Khachar and Somla Khachar. As the riders halted at the village well to water their horses, women drawing water recognized the luminous form of Shreehari seated upon his mare, Manki. They hurried into the village and informed Harkhchand, a devout bania devotee: “Your Bhagwan has arrived at the village boundary on horseback!”
Harkhchand and his pious wife were materially very poor, yet their love for Shreehari knew no bounds. Dropping his work, Harkhchand sprinted to the outskirts, fell prostrate at Shreehari’s lotus feet, gripped Manki’s bridle, and pleaded with choked emotion: “O Lord! You have showered boundless mercy upon this pauper today! You must sanctify my humble home; I pledge my very life that You shall not depart without partaking of a meal!”
Shreehari gently reasoned, “Harkhchand, a large company of Kathi Darbars travels with Us and we have a long distance to cover.” Seeing the devotee’s unyielding persistence, the Lord laid down a condition: “We shall enter your house only if you feed Us simple urad dal and dry bajra rotla!” Overjoyed, Harkhchand escorted the party to his humble abode, seated Shreehari on a simple cot on the veranda, and warmly welcomed the chieftains.
Going inside, Harkhchand told his wife of the condition. His devoted wife replied, “When the Lord of the cosmos graces our hut, how could we offer merely dal and dry bread? Take our heavy brass water pot from the stand, sell it in the market, and bring milk, ghee, and wheat; I shall prepare royal doodhpak (sweet saffron rice pudding) and malpuda!” Harkhchand slipped out through the back alley, sold the vessel, brought the provisions, and his wife prepared a sumptuous divine feast.
When the exquisite meal of doodhpak and malpuda was placed before Shreehari, the Lord smiled knowingly: “Harkhchand! You claimed to be poor, yet this feast is fit for an emperor! We will not taste a single morsel unless you present Us with five hundred silver rupees in cash!” Harkhchand was momentarily stunned, but his wife whispered without hesitation: “Pawn our ancestral house to a moneylender, but under no circumstance let the Lord leave hungry!” Harkhchand immediately mortgaged his cottage, obtained five hundred rupees, and laid the coins at Shreehari’s holy feet. Only then did the Lord eat heartily and bless the household.
After dining, Shreehari asked Harkhchand to guide them to Visnagar, saying He wished to deposit the cash with a merchant. Upon reaching Visnagar, Shreehari used the entire five hundred rupees to purchase two thousand maunds (approx. 40,000 kg) of tuver pulses at the dirt-cheap rate of four maunds per rupee. Loading carts, He instructed Harkhchand: “Store this grain carefully in your home; do not touch it until We command!”
The following year (Samvat 1869 / 1813 CE), Gujarat was struck by the catastrophic ‘Oganotero’ famine. Rains failed completely, and thousands faced starvation. Harkhchand wrote to Shreehari: “Maharaj, Your grain is lying in my house and famine riots are breaking out; please summon it!” Shreeji Maharaj replied: “Harkhchand! Distribute this tuver freely as charitable food (sadavrut) to all wandering ascetics and starving travelers, and sell what is needed to sustain yourself!”
Harkhchand followed the Lord’s mandate faithfully. He fed thousands of destitute people daily and sold surplus grain at the prevailing famine rate of eight rupees per maund. Miraculously, like the celestial Akshaya Patra, the grain never diminished! By the time the famine passed, Harkhchand had redeemed his mortgaged home, saved countless lives, and still possessed a fortune of fifteen thousand rupees. Thus, Shreehari tested His devotee’s love, rewarded his sacrifice a hundredfold, and preserved him from ruin.
