ગોંડલ તાબે દેરડીના નિષ્ણાત વૈદ્ય રૂપશી શેઠે મુસ્લિમ જમાદાર કાયાભાઈ સંધીના અસાધ્ય દર્દને શત્રુભાવ ભૂલી નિઃસ્વાર્થપણે મટાડી શ્રીજીમહારાજનો અનંત રાજીપો સંપાદન કર્યો.
ગોંડલ રાજ્ય તાબે આવેલા દેરડી ગામમાં રૂપશીભાઈ શેઠ નામે શ્રીજીમહારાજના એક અનન્ય પ્રેમીભક્ત રહેતા હતા. રૂપશી શેઠને આયુર્વેદિક વૈદકશાસ્ત્રનું ઊંડું જ્ઞાન હતું અને અનેક અસાધ્ય રોગોના દર્દીઓને તેઓ પોતાની ઔષધિઓથી સાજા કરતા હતા.
તે સમયમાં કાયાભાઈ સંધી નામે એક અત્યંત ક્રૂર, ઉપદ્રવી અને લૂંટારુ સ્વભાવનો મુસ્લિમ જમાદાર તે વિસ્તારમાં ભય ફેલાવતો હતો. ઉનાળાના બળબળતા બપોરે ધોમધખતા તાપમાં ઘોડેસવારી કરતાં કાયાભાઈ સંધીને આકરી લૂ લાગી ગઈ અને શરીરમાં ભયંકર દાહ-જ્વર ઉપડ્યો. શરીર અગ્નિની જેમ તપવા લાગ્યું અને મુખમાંથી લોહી નીકળવા માંડ્યું. રાજકોટ, ગોંડલ અને જૂનાગઢના મોટા મોટા હકીમો-વૈદ્યોએ હાથ ધોઈ નાખ્યા અને કહી દીધું કે આ દર્દી હવે ચોવીસ કલાકથી વધુ જીવી શકશે નહીં!
મરણપથારીએ પડેલા કાયાભાઈના માણસોએ દેરડી આવી વૈદ્યરાજ રૂપશી શેઠને આજીજી કરી. લોકોએ રૂપશી શેઠને ચેતવ્યા કે આ તો ક્રૂર લૂંટારો છે, એને સાજો ન કરાય. પરંતુ એક સાચા વૈષ્ણવ અને સત્સંગી તરીકે રૂપશી શેઠના હૃદયમાં કેવળ દયા અને કરુણા હતી. તેમણે કહ્યું, “પીડાતા જીવની સેવા કરવી એ જ અમારો ધર્મ છે!” રૂપશી શેઠે તરત ઔષધિઓ તૈયાર કરી અને કાયાભાઈના નિવાસસ્થાને પહોંચ્યા. તેમણે ચંદન, કપૂર, ગુલાબજળ અને વિશેષ વનસ્પતિઓના શીતળ લેપ તૈયાર કરી કાયાભાઈના સમગ્ર શરીરે ચોપડ્યા અને ખાસ કાઢો બનાવી પાયો. ચમત્કારિક રૂપે થોડા જ કલાકોમાં કાયાભાઈના શરીરનો દાહ શમી ગયો અને તે પૂર્ણપણે સ્વસ્થ થઈ ગયો.
કાયાભાઈ સંધી રૂપશી શેઠના ચરણોમાં ઢળી પડ્યો અને સોનામહોરો તથા જમીન ભેટ આપવા લાગ્યો. પરંતુ નિઃસ્પૃહ રૂપશી શેઠે એક પાઈ પણ લેવાની સાફ ના પાડી દીધી અને કહ્યું, “અમે તો કેવળ ભગવાન શ્રી સ્વામિનારાયણના રાજીપા અર્થે આ સેવા કરી છે!”
જ્યારે રૂપશી શેઠ ગઢપુર દર્શને આવ્યા ત્યારે શ્રીજીમહારાજે ભરી સભામાં તેમને બાથમાં લઈને ભેટી પડ્યા અને બોલ્યા, “રૂપશી શેઠ! તમે શત્રુ પ્રત્યે પણ જે નિર્દોષ દયાભાવ રાખ્યો છે, તેનાથી અમે અત્યંત રાજી થયા છીએ! સાચો હરિભક્ત એ જ છે જે સર્વ જીવો પ્રત્યે આત્મભાવ અને કરુણા રાખે.” સદગુરુ નિષ્કુળાનંદ સ્વામીએ ભક્તચિંતામણીમાં દેરડીના રૂપશી શેઠના આ ગુણોનું ગૌરવગાન કર્યું છે.

देरडी के प्रेमीभक्त रूपशी शेठ वैद्य की कायाभाई संधी पर दया और श्रीहरि की असीम कृपा
गोंडल के समीप देरडी गाँव में रूपशीभाई शेठ नाम के श्रीहरि के एक परम स्नेही भक्त रहते थे। वे आयुर्वेद के प्रकांड वैद्य थे और असाध्य रोगों के निदान में निपुण थे।
उस काल में कायाभाई संधी नामक एक क्रूर उपद्रवी जमादार क्षेत्र में आतंक का पर्याय था। ज्येष्ठ मास की भीषण धूप में तीव्र लू लगने से कायाभाई को प्राणघातक दाह-ज्वर हुआ। शरीर आग की तरह तपने लगा और मुख से रक्त गिरने लगा। सभी बड़े हकीमों ने उसके बचने की आशा छोड़ दी।
मरणासन्न कायाभाई के साथियों ने देरडी आकर वैद्य रूपशी शेठ से गुहार लगाई। लोगों ने चेतावनी दी कि यह दुष्ट है, इसकी सहायता न करें। किंतु दयालु रूपशी शेठ ने कहा, “पीड़ित की चिकित्सा करना ही हमारा धर्म है।” उन्होंने चंदन, कपूर, गुलाबजल आदि शीतल द्रव्यों का लेप कर विशेष औषधियाँ दीं, जिससे कुछ ही घंटों में कायाभाई पूर्ण स्वस्थ हो गया।
कायाभाई ने कृतज्ञ होकर स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ भेंट करनी चाहीं, किंतु रूपशी शेठ ने एक कौड़ी भी स्वीकार नहीं की और कहा कि यह सब भगवान स्वामिनारायण की कृपा है।
गढपुर में जब श्रीहरि को यह ज्ञात हुआ, तो प्रभु ने रूपशी शेठ का आलिंगन कर कहा, “वैद्यराज! शत्रु पर भी आपने जो अहैतुकी दया दिखाई, उससे हम अत्यंत प्रसन्न हैं!” निष्कुलानंद स्वामी ने भक्त चिंतामणि में रूपशी शेठ की महिमा गाई है।

Premibhakta Rupshi Sheth Vaidya of Derdi: Healing of Kayabhai Sandhi and Shrihari’s Divine Approval
In the village of Derdi under the principality of Gondal, there lived an ardent devotee named Rupshibhai Sheth. Endowed with profound knowledge of Ayurvedic medicine, he was renowned for curing seemingly incurable afflictions with herbal remedies.
During that period, a notorious and tyrannical commander named Kayabhai Sandhi instilled dread across the countryside. Travelling under the scorching midday sun of summer, Kayabhai suffered an acute, life-threatening heat stroke. His body burned as if on fire, and he began vomiting blood. Renowned physicians from Rajkot, Gondal, and Junagadh abandoned all hope, declaring that he would not survive another twenty-four hours.
In desperation, his attendants hurried to Derdi to plead with Rupshi Sheth. Villagers cautioned the physician against aiding such a ruthless oppressor, but Rupshi Sheth, embodying the essence of pure Vaishnava compassion, responded, “To alleviate the suffering of any distressed soul is our paramount duty.” Preparing potent herbal formulations, he hastened to Kayabhai’s bedside. Applying cooling pastes of sandalwood, camphor, and rosewater across his body and administering a restorative decoction, the burning fever miraculously subsided within hours, restoring Kayabhai to health.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Kayabhai offered heaps of gold coins, but the selfless devotee declined all rewards, stating, “We served you purely to please Bhagwan Swaminarayan.”
When Rupshi Sheth subsequently arrived in Gadhpur, Shreeji Maharaj embraced him warmly before the entire assembly, praising him: “Rupshi Sheth! By showering selfless compassion even upon a hostile adversary, you have won Our deepest divine favor! A true devotee beholds the divine presence in all living beings.” Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami immortalized the saintly virtues of Rupshi Sheth in the sacred Bhakta Chintamani.
