Bhanderi Rambhai of Chadiya Village: The Ox with Eight Teeth, Three Coconuts of Devotion, and Final Liberation
In the village of Chadiya near Amreli lived Bhanderi Rambhai, a devout, steadfast disciple of Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj. Anchored in resolute faith in Shreehari’s supreme divinity, he observed the five moral vows strictly and continuously chanted the Swaminarayan Mahamantra while toiling in his agricultural fields.
On one occasion, Rambhai purchased a bullock for farming. Upon inspecting the animal, local villagers ridiculed him, saying: “Rambhai! This bullock has only seven teeth (considered physically flawed)!” Hearing their mockery, Rambhai made a silent vow before Shreehari: “O Maharaj! If my bullock grows its eighth tooth, I shall travel to Gadhpur and place two sacred coconuts at Your divine lotus feet!”
Sometime later, Rambhai joined a pilgrim party of devotees traveling to Gadhpur for Shreehari’s divine darshan. Upon arriving, they led the bullocks to the holy river Ghela to bathe and drink. Inspecting the animal’s mouth by the riverbank, Rambhai discovered to his utter delight that an eighth tooth had fully emerged!
Filled with gratitude, Rambhai hurried to the bazaar, purchased two auspicious coconuts, and ascended to the Darbargadh. Prostrating reverently at Shreehari’s holy feet, he placed the two coconuts before the Lord.
All-knowing Shreeji Maharaj smiled knowingly and inquired: “Rambhai! Has your bullock grown its eighth tooth?” Rambhai bowed with folded hands: “Yes, Maharaj! By Your divine grace, I beheld the eighth tooth with my own eyes at the Ghela river today!” Shreehari chuckled teasingly: “Rambhai! These two coconuts were merely the fulfillment of your bullock’s vow; where is the coconut for offering reverence to Us? Bring Our personal offering coconut!” Overjoyed, Rambhai dashed to the market, procured a third coconut, and placed it devotionally at Shreehari’s lotus feet.
Rambhai stayed in Gadhpur for five days, drinking deep from the nectar of divine discourses in the company of the holy sadhus. When he returned to Chadiya and the villagers witnessed the bullock with eight fully formed teeth, they were left spellbound by the Lord’s divine grace.
Years later, when Rambhai reached his final hour on earth, Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj descended with countless celestial chariots and a glorious assembly of muktas to escort him. Rambhai summoned his sons and family, joyfully announcing: “Behold! Lord Shreeji Maharaj has arrived in person with all His liberated souls to escort me! I am departing with Him to Akshardham!” With peaceful devotion, Rambhai shed his mortal frame and ascended triumphantly to the eternal abode.
