Buranpur Devotee Overcomes Human Conception and Experiences Divine Akshardham in Samadhi

Through the sacred association of the Nand paramhansas in the town of Buranpur, an earnest spiritual seeker recognized the supreme divinity of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan and embraced the satsang fold by observing the five moral vows (panch-vartman). Filled with intense devotional longing to have the direct darshan of the manifest Lord, he set out on foot for Gadhpur. While departing from his home, he had firmly resolved in his mind to stay in Gadhpur for two full months to absorb the bliss of Shreehari’s divine presence.

Upon arriving in Gadhpur, he sanctified himself by bathing in the sacred waters of the River Ghela and entered the royal courtyard of Dada Khachar. At that moment, Shreeji Maharaj was seated having his shave (vattu) done by the barber. When the shave was completed, Maharaj, enacting an ordinary human pastime (manushyabhav lila), called for his meal without taking a bath and sat on the veranda edge to eat.

Observing this from a distance, the devotee from Buranpur was taken aback by doubt and intellectual skepticism: “Where have I come? The sadhus proclaimed that Swaminarayan is the supreme Lord Himself, yet he does not even follow the elementary custom of bathing after a shave!” Overcome by the illusion of human perception, his faith wavered, and early the next morning he packed his belongings to return home.

Being omniscient (antaryami), Shreehari knew the inner workings of his heart. Calling the devotee close, Maharaj smiled compassionately and asked, “O devotee! You left home with a firm resolve to reside here for two months; why then are you hastily preparing to depart on the very second day?”

Feeling awkward, the devotee offered a polite excuse: “Maharaj! We are worldly householders burdened with countless duties, so I must return home today.”

Shreeji Maharaj smiled gently and said, “Dear devotee, just sit quietly here for a few moments, and then you may leave at leisure.” Saying this, Shreehari cast a compassionate glance upon him and plunged him into a profound state of divine trance (samadhi).

In the spiritual realm of samadhi, Shreehari led the way while the devotee followed closely behind. Along the transcendental journey, Shreehari revealed the radiant splendors of Vaikunth, Goloka, and Shwetadvip. Then Shreehari said, “Come, let Us now show you Our supreme abode, Akshardham!”

In the immortal expanse of Akshardham, Shreehari manifested upon a brilliant divine throne amidst an assembly of infinite liberated souls (Aksharmuktas). The divine muktas lovingly instructed the devotee: “O soul! Though the Supreme Lord appears in a human frame and engages in mundane activities, He is eternally transcendental, and every single one of His actions is purely divine. Never harbor human perceptions toward the Almighty.”

When the devotee awoke from samadhi, all his doubts and material misapprehensions were completely dissolved. Realizing Shreehari to be the supreme Purushottam Narayan Himself, he prostrated at His lotus feet in awe and gratitude. Abandoning all thoughts of returning home, he stayed joyfully in Gadhpur for the full two months, bathing in the celestial bliss of Shreehari’s discourses and divine presence.

As affirmed in the sacred scripture Satsangi Jivan: ‘divyaṁ kṛṣṇasya rūpaṁ bhavati ca satataṁ tasya loko’pi divyaḥ…’
