Dhana Soni of Botad: The Silver Water Jug, Half a Rupee of Greed, and Shrihari’s Sermon on Pure Charity
A devotee once offered five and a quarter silver rupees to Mulji Brahmachari to fashion an exquisite silver loti (water jug) for Shreeji Maharaj’s drinking water. Brahmachari entrusted the task and the money to Dhana Soni, a goldsmith devotee from Botad.
Silver was abundant and inexpensive at that time. Dhana Soni crafted the jug using silver worth four and three-quarters rupees, covetously setting aside the remaining half-rupee with the self-justifying rationalization that he would use it to sponsor a devotional food offering (thal) for Maharaj. Returning to Gadhpur, he presented the loti to Mulji Brahmachari. As Shreeji Maharaj completed His lunch on the veranda of Dada Khachar’s courtyard, He washed His hands and drank cool water from the new silver vessel.
Dhana Soni proudly asked, “O Maharaj! Does the water pour smoothly from the spout of this loti?” Shreeji Maharaj looked directly into his eyes with a knowing smile: “Dhana Soni! Had you incorporated that saved half-rupee into this vessel as well, the spout would have poured far more elegantly! You shrunk Our loti simply to fund your own thal!”
Stunned that his innermost private scheming had been exposed before the entire assembly, Dhana Soni turned red with embarrassment. Falling at Shrihari’s feet, he wept and prayed, “O omniscient Lord! Nothing is concealed from You! In my foolish greed, I withheld half a rupee to fund an offering. The fallen soul is an age-old thief before God; my greed has disgraced me today. Please forgive this wretched servant!”
After blessing him with sanctified food, Shreeji Maharaj delivered an unforgettable spiritual sermon in the Akshar Ordi: “Though one may diligently perform japa, mental worship, meditation, and devotional service, greed remains the root of all spiritual ruin! Under the sway of greed, the soul dares to steal even from God and the Guru. Charity and religious tithes must strictly be offered from one’s own honest, hard-earned income, never by misappropriating consecrated temple funds!” Deeply moved, Dhana Soni took this timeless moral to heart.
