ભરૂચના શેઠ દયાળજીએ પદ્મપુરાણના આધારે શ્રીહરિના ચરણોમાં સોળ ચિહ્નો જોઈ અવતારીપણાની પૂર્ણ પ્રતીતિ કરી; પ્રભુએ ચારેય વાણિયાઓને વર્તમાન ધરાવ્યા.
નર્મદા તટે આવેલા પ્રાચીન ભરૂચ નગરમાં શેઠ દયાળજીભાઈ અને નારાયણજીભાઈ નામે બે સગા વણિક ભાઈઓ રહેતા હતા. બંને ભાઈઓ અત્યંત ધાર્મિક, સદાચારી અને પૂર્વજન્મના સંસ્કારી મુમુક્ષુ હતા. તેમણે પોતાના ઘેર એક વિદ્વાન બ્રાહ્મણ રાખીને પવિત્ર ‘પદ્મપુરાણ’ ની કથાનું શ્રવણ આદર્યું હતું.
કથા દરમિયાન પદ્મપુરાણમાં એવો સ્પષ્ટ શ્લોક અને પ્રસંગ આવ્યો કે: “જ્યારે સાક્ષાત્ પૂર્ણ પુરુષોત્તમ પરમેશ્વર પૃથ્વી પર નરતન ધારણ કરીને અવતરે છે, ત્યારે તેમના બંને ચરણકમળમાં અષ્ટકોણ, પદ્મ, વજ્ર, ધ્વજ, અંકુશ, જંબુફળ, જવ, મત્સ્ય આદિ સોળ દિવ્ય ચિહ્નો પ્રગટ વિદ્યમાન હોય છે!” આ શાસ્ત્રોક્ત રહસ્ય સાંભળ્યા પછી બંને ભાઈઓના અંતરમાં તીવ્ર ઝંખના જાગી કે જો સાચે જ આ કળિયુગમાં પ્રભુ પૃથ્વી પર પ્રગટ થયા હોય, તો આપણને એવા સોળ ચિહ્નોવાળા સાક્ષાત્ ભગવાનનાં દર્શન ક્યારે થાય?
તેવામાં એક દિવસે ભરૂચમાં એક સત્સંગી હરિભક્ત પાસેથી તેમને શુભ સમાચાર મળ્યા કે: “આ સમયે સાક્ષાત્ પૂર્ણ પુરુષોત્તમ નારાયણ ભગવાન શ્રી સ્વામિનારાયણ પ્રગટ વિચરી રહ્યા છે અને હાલ ચરોતરના વડતાલ ધામમાં ભવ્ય સમૈયામાં બિરાજમાન છે!” આ સાંભળતાં જ શેઠ દયાળજીભાઈ અને તેમના અન્ય ત્રણ વણિક મિત્રોએ સત્યની પરીક્ષા કરવા માટે વડતાલ જવાનો દ્રઢ નિર્ણય કર્યો.
ચારેય વેપારીઓ વડતાલ પહોંચ્યા. તે સમયે લક્ષ્મીનારાયણ દેવના સાન્નિધ્યમાં ભવ્ય ઉત્સવ ચાલી રહ્યો હતો અને હજારો હરિભક્તોની પ્રચંડ મેદની ઊમટી હતી. અજાણ્યા હોવાને લીધે અને ભીડ જોઈને દયાળજી શેઠ અને મિત્રો સભામાં પાછળ એક ખૂણામાં ઊભા રહ્યા. તેમના મનમાં સંકલ્પ ચાલતો હતો: “જો સ્વામિનારાયણ સાક્ષાત્ પરમેશ્વર હોય, તો અમને આગળ બોલાવીને પોતાના ચરણોમાં પદ્મપુરાણવાળાં સોળ ચિહ્નોનાં દર્શન કરાવે!”
અંતર્યામી શ્રીજીમહારાજે હજારોની મેદની વચ્ચે દૂર ઊભેલા આ ચારેય મુમુક્ષુઓના મનનો સંકલ્પ તત્ક્ષણ જાણી લીધો! શ્રીહરિએ હાથના ઈશારે સભા વચ્ચેથી માર્ગ કરી એ ચારેય વણિકોને પોતાની સમીપે બોલાવ્યા. સંતો-હરિભક્તોએ માર્ગ કરી આપ્યો.
દયાળજીભાઈ અને સાથીઓ ધ્રૂજતા હૈયે આગળ આવ્યા અને પ્રભુના ચરણોમાં સાષ્ટાંગ પ્રણામ કરી બેઠા. તે જ ક્ષણે ભક્તવાંછિતકલ્પતરુ શ્રીજીમહારાજે પોતાના બંને ચરણકમળ સહેજ ઊંચા કરી પાટ પર પધરાવ્યા! ચારેય મુમુક્ષુઓએ નજર કરી તો આશ્ચર્ય વચ્ચે પદ્મપુરાણમાં વર્ણવેલાં સોળે-સોળ દિવ્ય ચિહ્નો—ઊર્ધ્વરેખા, ધ્વજ, વજ્ર, અંકુશ, કળશ, પદ્મ, સ્વસ્તિક આદિ—પ્રભુના રક્તવર્ણા ચરણતળિયે ઝગમગતા દીઠા!
સાક્ષાત્ શાસ્ત્રોક્ત પુરાવા નજરે નિહાળી ચારેય વણિકોની તમામ શંકાઓ ક્ષણવારમાં ઓગળી ગઈ. તેમને અચળ પ્રતીતિ થઈ ગઈ કે આ કોઈ સામાન્ય સાધુ કે અવતાર નથી, પરંતુ સ્વયં સર્વાવતારી પૂર્ણ પુરુષોત્તમ નારાયણ છે! શેઠ દયાળજીભાઈએ બે હાથ જોડી ગદગદ કંઠે સ્તુતિ કરી: “હે પ્રભુ! આપ જ સાક્ષાત્ સચ્ચિદાનંદ પરમેશ્વર છો! પદ્મપુરાણમાં જે સોળ ચિહ્નો સાંભળેલાં, તે આજે આપના ચરણકમળમાં સાક્ષાત્ નિહાળી અમારો માનવ જન્મ ધન્ય થઈ ગયો! હવે અમારા મનમાં કોઈ જિજ્ઞાસા કે સંશય નથી; આપ કૃપા કરી અમને પંચવર્તમાન ધરાવી આપના ચરણોના દાસ બનાવો!”
શ્રીજીમહારાજે તેમની ઉત્કટ મુમુક્ષુતા જોઈ અત્યંત પ્રસન્ન થઈ ચારેય ભક્તોને કંઠી બાંધી સત્સંગમાં દીક્ષિત કર્યા. દયાળજી શેઠ અને તેમના સાથીઓ થોડા દિવસ વડતાલમાં રોકાઈ શ્રીહરિ અને સંતોના દિવ્ય સમાગમનો લાભ લઈ પરમ આનંદ સાથે ભરૂચ પરત ફર્યા.

भरूच के सेठ दयालजीभाई की वडताल में परीक्षा, पद्मपुराण के सोलह चिह्नों के दर्शन और सत्संग दीक्षा
भरूच के सेठ दयालजीभाई ने पद्मपुराण में सुना था कि साक्षात् भगवान के चरणों में १६ दिव्य चिह्न होते हैं।
प्रभु स्वामीनारायण के प्राकट्य की बात सुनकर वे तीन वणिक मित्रों सहित परीक्षा हेतु वडताल समैया में आए। भीड़ में दूर खड़े होकर उन्होंने मन में दर्शन का संकल्प किया।
अंतर्यामी श्रीहरि ने उन्हें समीप बुलाया और अपने दोनों चरणकमल दर्शाए। पद्मपुराणोक्त १६ चिह्नों के प्रत्यक्ष दर्शन कर चारों वणिकों को प्रभु के पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम होने का दृढ़ निश्चय हुआ। वे कंठी पहनकर सत्संगी बने।

Testing at Vadtal: Sheth Dayaljibhai of Bharuch, Beholding the 16 Divine Footmarks from Padma Purana, and Initiation
In the ancient port city of Bharuch on the banks of the sacred Narmada river lived Sheth Dayaljibhai and his brother Narayanjibhai, prosperous merchants of the Vaniyo community. Both brothers were pious, noble, and earnest spiritual seekers from past incarnations. They regularly employed a learned Brahmin scholar at their home to recite the holy ‘Padma Purana’.
During the sacred discourses, an explicit verse from the Padma Purana captured their attention: “Whenever the Supreme Absolute Lord manifests in human form upon this earth, His divine lotus feet are eternally adorned with sixteen sacred auspicious marks—the lotus, thunderbolt, flag, goad, fish, barley grain, kalash, swastika, and upward line!” Upon hearing this scriptural truth, an intense yearning awakened within Dayaljibhai’s heart: “If the Supreme Lord has truly descended upon earth in this dark age of Kali, when shall we be blessed to behold those sacred feet bearing the sixteen divine marks?”
Shortly thereafter, a traveling devotee arrived in Bharuch bearing joyous tidings: “Presently, the Supreme Purushottam Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan has manifested in human form and is gracing a monumental festival at Vadtaldham in Charotar!” Hearing this, Sheth Dayaljibhai and three fellow merchant friends resolved to travel to Vadtal to verify the Lord’s divinity with their own eyes.
Arriving in Vadtal amidst a massive festival in the presence of Shri Lakshminarayan Dev, they were confronted by a sea of tens of thousands of devotees. Being unfamiliar newcomers, Dayaljibhai and his companions stood at the distant periphery of the assembly, harboring a silent, unspoken thought: “If Swaminarayan is truly the omniscient Supreme Lord, may He call us forward from this vast crowd and reveal the sixteen marks of the Padma Purana upon His lotus feet!”
The omniscient Master instantly perceived the secret prayer harbored within their hearts! Gesturing with His hand, Shreeji Maharaj instructed the crowd to make way and summoned the four merchants forward. The devotees parted, allowing them to advance to the dais.
Trembling with awe, Dayaljibhai and his companions approached and prostrated at Shreehari’s lotus feet. At that precise instant, the wish-fulfilling Lord gently raised both of His divine feet and placed them upon a low stool before their eyes! Gazing upon the soles, the merchants were astounded to see every single one of the sixteen celestial emblems described in the Padma Purana shining vividly upon Maharaj’s reddish lotus feet!
Beholding this undeniable scriptural proof, every lingering doubt evaporated like mist before the morning sun! Absolute, unshakable conviction in Shreehari’s supreme Godhead crystallized within their souls. Sheth Dayaljibhai prayed with folded hands and streaming tears: “O Supreme Lord! You alone are the primordial Absolute Godhead! Beholding the sixteen divine marks of the Padma Purana upon Your holy feet today, our human existence has attained supreme fulfillment! We harbor no further questions; please initiate us with the sacred vows and accept us as Your eternal servants!”
Delighted by their pure spiritual yearning, Shreeji Maharaj initiated all four merchants with the sacred kanthi and moral vows. The blessed devotees spent several days in Vadtal soaking in the bliss of Shreehari’s divine presence before returning joyously to Bharuch.
