Savji Luhar of Bhanduri: Nilkanth Varni’s Night in the Cattle Shed and the Sacred Baati

Nestled near the Gir forest near Keshod lay the village of Bhanduri, home to Savji Luhar, a pious blacksmith who diligently served visiting mendicants.

Walking barefoot through dense jungles, the teenage ascetic Nilkanth Varni entered Bhanduri. Savji invited Him to dine, but Varni explained that He cooked His own food and required secluded lodging. Savji offered his clean cattle shed (kodh), which the Lord cheerfully accepted.

Declining pre-cooked food, Varni accepted wheat flour and fresh cow’s milk. Setting up three stones as a rustic hearth, Nilkanth Varni roasted crisp wheat baatis over embers and partook of them with milk, liberating Savji’s lineage for all time. A magnificent Swaminarayan temple stands today upon that sanctified spot in Bhanduri.
