Ala Suthar’s Test of Shreehari at Barpatoli, Raghavanand Swami’s Prophetic Promise, and His Father’s Divine Departure to Akshardham

In the village of Barpatoli in the Nagher region, the continuous spiritual tours of the Nand paramhansas had awakened spiritual thirst among many souls. In this village lived Ala Suthar (a carpenter by trade), who lived detached from worldly attachments yet lacked firm conviction regarding the supreme divinity of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.

When the pilgrim congregation from Barpatoli set out for Gadhpur, Ala joined them. Along the way, Ala harbored an inner test: “If Swaminarayan is truly an omniscient incarnation of God, He will voluntarily ask for the sandalwood (sukhad) piece and sacred tulsi leaves that I have secretly concealed inside the fold of my turban!”

Upon reaching Gadhpur, Shreeji Maharaj was bathing. When informed to wait a short while, Ala arrogantly surmised, “Knowing of my test, Swaminarayan has retreated!” Shortly thereafter, Maharaj emerged in spotless white garments, sat upon His cot, and instructed Mulji Brahmachari to summon the Barpatoli devotees. While others sat close, Ala stood aloof at a distance.

Omniscient Shreehari extended His arm, beckoned Ala to His side, and commanded: “Ala! Untie the sandalwood and tulsi leaves tied to the corner of your turban and place them at Our lotus feet!”

Hearing this, Ala was struck with awe! The revelation of Maharaj’s omniscience shattered his pride completely. Surrendering the items at the Lord’s feet, he prostrated in reverent surrender and accepted the sacred vows of Satsang.

Returning home, Ala urged his elderly father to embrace Satsang, but his father stubbornly resisted. Sometime later, the exalted Sadguru Raghavanand Swami visited Barpatoli. Ala virtually compelled his father to meet Swami. When Swami explained the preciousness of human life and salvation, the father stipulated a bold condition: “Swami, I shall wear the kanthi and become a satsangi only if you promise me that before this kanthi ever breaks, Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan Himself will come to escort me to His divine abode!”

Raghavanand Swami fearlessly granted the boon and tied the sanctified tulsi kanthi around his neck.

About a year elapsed when one day the father’s kanthi snapped! The moment it broke, he called Ala and declared, “Son! Guru Raghavanand Swami promised that the day my kanthi breaks, Shreeji Maharaj will arrive to take me to Akshardham! Today I shall depart for the eternal abode.”

Even as he spoke, an effulgent divine light filled the room! Shreeji Maharaj manifested in radiant majesty accompanied by divine muktas. The father offered his final ‘Jai Swaminarayan’ to all, cast off his mortal frame, assumed a divine transcendental form, and ascended to Akshardham in the presence of the Lord.
