શ્રીહરિએ બળોલમાં રૈયા ખટાણાને ઘેર થૂંલી જમતાં કોણી ચાટી દેવીદાનને મહાદેવજીના વચનની પ્રતીતિ કરાવી મહાન અષ્ટનંદ કવિ દેવાનંદ સ્વામી બનાવ્યા.
એક વખત પરબ્રહ્મ શ્રીહરિ જેતલપુરથી વિચરણ કરતાં કરતાં ભાલ પ્રદેશના બળોલ ગામે પરમ હરિભક્ત પટેલ રૈયા ખટાણાને ઘેર પધાર્યા. રૈયાભગતે પ્રેમપૂર્વક શ્રીહરિને આસન આપી કાંસાની મોટી તાંસળીમાં ગરમાગરમ થૂંલી (ઘઉંના ફાડાની મીઠી લાપસી) પીરસી. તે સમયે ઘરનાં વૃદ્ધ માતુશ્રીએ પૂછ્યું, “મહારાજ! થૂંલી સાથે દૂધ લેશો કે દહીં?” શ્રીહરિએ પ્રસન્ન થઈને કહ્યું, “અમે તો દૂધ અને દહીં બંને લેશું!” એમ કહી તાંસળીમાં દૂધ અને દહીં બંને મેળવી છલોછલ ભરી દીધી, સાથે કેરડાંનું અથાણું પીરસાયું.
શ્રીહરિએ થૂંલી, દૂધ અને દહીંને ભેગાં કરીને આખી તાંસળી છલોછલ ભરી. થાળી જરાક હલાવે તો બંને બાજુ ઢોળાય, એટલે શ્રીહરિ બંને હાથના આડા ખોબા ભરી ભરીને જમવા લાગ્યા. એમ જમતાં જમતાં પ્રવાહીના રેલા (રગેડા) શ્રીહરિની કોણી સુધી ઉતરવા માંડ્યા, અને શ્રીહરિ પોતાની જીભ લંબાવીને કોણીએથી રગેડા ચાટવા લાગ્યા!
તે સમયે ગામના નાના ચારણ બાળક દેવીદાન પણ અન્ય ગ્રામજનો સાથે દર્શને આવ્યા હતા, પરંતુ ઓસરીની જાળી પાસે અંધારું હોવાથી એમને શ્રીહરિના દર્શન બરાબર થતાં નહોતા. પોતાના અનન્ય ભક્તના હૃદયનો મનોરથ પૂર્ણ કરવા સર્વજ્ઞ શ્રીહરિ બોલ્યા, “અમારે તો ફળિયામાં અજવાળામાં ગાડા પર બેસીને જમવું છે!” એમ કહી શ્રીહરિ ચોકમાં ઊભેલા ગાડા પર બેસીને જમવા લાગ્યા.
ગામના સામાન્ય લોકો શ્રીહરિને કોણીએથી રગેડા ચાટતાં જોઈને ભ્રમિત થયા અને કહેવા લાગ્યા, “આ તો કોઈ ગાંડો બાવો લાગે છે, આને તો ખાવાની પણ ભાન નથી!” આમ બોલીને લોકો વિખેરાઈ ગયા. પરંતુ બાળક દેવીદાન તો આ અદ્ભુત દર્શન જોઈને સ્તબ્ધ થઈ ગયા!
દેવીદાનને તત્કાળ ધીંગડા ગામની સીમમાં શિવજીની કમળપૂજા કરતી વખતે મહાદેવજીએ આપેલું વરદાન સ્મરણમાં આવ્યું. મહાદેવે માથે હાથ મૂકીને કહ્યું હતું, “દેવીદાન! ઘરે જાઓ, તમને પ્રગટ પુરુષોત્તમ નારાયણની ઓળખાણ થશે. તમે મહાન કવિ થશો અને તમારાં કાવ્યોથી હજારો જીવોનો મોક્ષ થશે!” ત્યારે દેવીદાને પૂછેલું, “હે મહાદેવ! હું પ્રગટ પ્રભુને કેવી રીતે ઓળખીશ?” ત્યારે શંકર ભગવાને એંધાણી આપેલી કે, “જેમની જીભ કોણી સુધી પહોંચીને અડકી જાય, તેમને જ સાક્ષાત પરમાત્મા જાણજો!”
આજે રૈયા ખટાણાના ફળિયામાં પ્રભુને પોતાની કોણી ચાટતાં જોઈને દેવીદાનના હૃદયમાં પૂર્ણ નિશ્ચય થઈ ગયો કે આ જ સાક્ષાત પૂર્ણ પુરુષોત્તમ નારાયણ છે! શ્રીહરિએ આ અદ્ભુત લીલા કેવળ પોતાના પૂર્વપ્રેમી ભક્ત દેવીદાનને પ્રતીતિ કરાવવા માટે જ રચી હતી.
દેવીદાન શ્રીહરિની સાથે ગઢપુર આવ્યા. શ્રીહરિએ તેમને ભગવતી દીક્ષા આપીને પ્રથમ ‘અભેદાનંદ’ નામ રાખ્યું અને સદગુરુ બ્રહ્માનંદ સ્વામીના શિષ્ય તરીકે સોંપ્યા. પરંતુ કાવ્યમાં છંદ અને નામાચરણમાં ‘અભેદાનંદ’ શબ્દ બંધબેસતો ન થતો હોવાથી શ્રીહરિએ પાછળથી તેમનું નામ ‘દેવાનંદ સ્વામી’ રાખ્યું. બ્રહ્માનંદ સ્વામી પાસે રહીને તેઓ સંસ્કૃત અને પિંગળ શાસ્ત્ર ભણીને અદ્ભુત કવિ બન્યા.
સદગુરુ બ્રહ્માનંદ સ્વામી સંવત ૧૮૮૮ના જેઠ સુદ દશમે અક્ષરધામ પધાર્યા, ત્યારબાદ આચાર્યશ્રી અયોધ્યાપ્રસાદજી મહારાજે દેવાનંદ સ્વામીને મૂળી મંદિરના મહંત તરીકે નીમ્યા. સ્વામીએ શિખરો, ઘુમ્મટ અને પ્રદક્ષિણાનાં નિર્માણકાર્યો કરાવી ૨૨ વર્ષ સુધી મૂળી મંદિરમાં અખંડ સેવા કરી. તેઓ શ્રીહરિના સુપ્રસિદ્ધ ‘અષ્ટનંદ કવિઓ’માં અગ્રગણ્ય સ્થાન ધરાવતા હતા.

बळोल में रैया खटाणा के घर थूँली भोजन और कविराज देवीदान को देवानंद स्वामी बनाना
एक बार परब्रह्म श्रीहरि जेतलपुर से विचरण करते हुए भाल प्रदेश के बळोल गाँव में परम भक्त पटेल रैया खटाणा के घर पधारे। रैयाभगत ने बड़े आदर से काँसे की बड़ी थाली में गरमागरम थूँली (दलिया/मीठी लापसी) परोसी। घर की वयोवृद्ध माताजी ने पूछा, “महाराज! थूँली के साथ दूध लेंगे या दही?” श्रीहरि ने प्रसन्न होकर कहा, “हम तो दूध और दही दोनों लेंगे!” थाली में दूध और दही मिलाकर उसे लबालब भर दिया गया, साथ में केर का अचार भी परोसा गया।
थाली इतनी भरी हुई थी कि जरा सा हिलते ही गिरने लगती, इसलिए श्रीहरि ने दोनों हाथों की अंजुलि बनाकर खाना शुरू किया। खाते-खाते दूध-दलिया की धार (रगेड़े) कोहनी तक बहने लगी, और श्रीहरि अपनी जिह्वा बढ़ाकर कोहनी से उसे चाटने लगे!
उस समय गाँव के एक छोटे चारण बालक देवीदान भी ग्रामीणों के साथ दर्शन करने आए थे, किंतु ओसरी की जाली में अंधेरा होने से उन्हें स्पष्ट दर्शन नहीं हो रहे थे। अपने भक्त का भाव पूर्ण करने के लिए श्रीहरि बोले, “हमें तो खुले आँगन में गाड़ी (बैलगाड़ी) पर बैठकर भोजन करना है!” और वे आँगन में रखी बैलगाड़ी पर बैठकर भोजन करने लगे।
सांसारिक लोग श्रीहरि को कोहनी से चाटते देखकर भ्रमित हो गए और कहने लगे, “यह तो कोई पागल बावा है, जिसे भोजन करने का भी ढंग नहीं आता!” ऐसा कहकर ग्रामीण चले गए। परंतु बालक देवीदान इस अलौकिक दृश्य को देखकर भावविभोर हो गए!
देवीदान को तत्काल धींगड़ा गाँव की सीमा में शिवजी द्वारा दिए गए वरदान की याद आ गई। बाल्यकाल में जब वे शिवजी की पूजा करने गए थे, तब महादेवजी ने प्रकट होकर कहा था, “देवीदान! तुम्हें साक्षात भगवान मिलेंगे। तुम महान कवि बनोगे और तुम्हारी रचनाओं से सहस्त्रों जीवों का कल्याण होगा।” जब देवीदान ने पूछा था कि मैं भगवान को कैसे पहचानूँगा, तब महादेवजी ने संकेत दिया था, “जिसकी जिह्वा अपनी कोहनी को स्पर्श कर ले, वही साक्षात परमात्मा हैं!”
आज बळोल में श्रीहरि को कोहनी स्पर्श करते देखकर देवीदान को पूर्ण निश्चय हो गया कि स्वामीनारायण ही साक्षात पूर्ण पुरुषोत्तम भगवान हैं! श्रीहरि ने यह विचित्र लीला केवल देवीदान को निश्चय कराने के लिए ही रची थी।
देवीदान श्रीहरि के साथ गढ़पुर आए। श्रीहरि ने उन्हें दीक्षा देकर ‘अभभेदानंद’ नाम दिया और सद्गुरु ब्रह्मानंद स्वामी को सौंपा। काव्य के छंदों में नाम के तालमेल हेतु बाद में श्रीहरि ने उनका नाम ‘देवानंद स्वामी’ रखा। वे महान कवि बने और अष्टनंद कवियों में विख्यात हुए। संवत १८८८ में ब्रह्मानंद स्वामी के धाम गमनोपरांत आचार्य अयोध्याप्रसादजी महाराज ने देवानंद स्वामी को मूळी मंदिर का महंत बनाया, जहाँ उन्होंने २२ वर्षों तक दिव्य सेवा की।

Divine Lila of Eating Thuli at Raiya Khatana’s Home in Balol and Initiating Devidan as Sadguru Devanand Swami
During His spiritual travels from Jetalpur, Supreme Lord Shreehari arrived in the village of Balol in the Bhal region at the residence of His dedicated devotee, Patel Raiya Khatana. With boundless devotion, Raiya Bhagat served Maharaj hot thuli (a sweet, broken-wheat porridge) in a large bronze bowl. Raiya’s elderly mother enquired, “Maharaj, would You like milk or yogurt with the thuli?” Shreehari graciously replied, “We shall take both milk and yogurt!” The bowl was filled to the brim with both milk and yogurt, accompanied by kerda pickles.
Because the bowl was filled to the very edge and would spill if moved, Shreehari began eating using both hands shaped as cups. As He ate enthusiastically, streams of the porridge and milk trickled down to His elbows, and Shreehari extended His tongue to lick the drips from His elbows!
At that time, a young Charan boy named Devidan had come with the village crowd to behold the Lord. However, because the veranda lattice was dim, he could not get a clear view. Perceiving the longing in the young boy’s heart, omniscient Shreehari said, “We wish to sit out in the open courtyard upon the bullock cart to dine in the light!” Maharaj then climbed onto the bullock cart in the courtyard to continue His meal.
Seeing Shreehari lick porridge from His elbows, ordinary villagers were baffled and dismissed Him: “This seems to be an eccentric ascetic who does not even know basic table manners!” Gossiping among themselves, they dispersed. But young Devidan was spellbound by what he witnessed!
Instantly, Devidan remembered a divine boon granted to him by Lord Mahadev in the outskirts of Dhingda village. While performing Kamal-puja, Lord Shiva had blessed him: “Devidan! You shall meet the manifest Supreme Lord. You will become a celebrated poet whose devotional hymns will liberate thousands!” When Devidan had asked how he would recognize the manifest Almighty, Mahadev had revealed a unique sign: “He whose tongue reaches and touches His own elbow is the Supreme Lord incarnate!”
Beholding Shreehari licking His elbow in the courtyard of Raiya Khatana, Devidan was overwhelmed with unshakeable conviction: Bhagwan Swaminarayan was indeed the Supreme Purushottam Narayan! Shreehari had performed this mysterious pastime solely to reveal His divine identity to Devidan.
Devidan accompanied Shreehari to Gadhpur, where the Lord granted him monastic initiation, initially naming him ‘Abhedanand’ and placing him under the mentorship of Sadguru Brahmanand Swami. Later, because the meter in poetic composition required a different cadence, Shreehari renamed him ‘Devanand Swami’. Under Brahmanand Swami’s tutelage, he mastered classical metrics and became one of the eminent ‘Ashta-Nand’ poet-saints. Following Brahmanand Swami’s departure to Akshardham in Samvat 1888, Acharya Ayodhyaprasadji Maharaj appointed Devanand Swami as the Mahant of the prestigious Muli temple, where he rendered glorious devotional service for 22 years.
