Bagasara Devotees Offer Vegetable Seeds to Shreehari, Glory of the Mahamantra, and Divine Famine Forewarnings

Devotees Velabhai, Rudabhai, and Dosabhai of the Sathwara community from Bagasara, alongside Karshanbhagat of Hamapur, journeyed to Gadhpur to obtain the darshan of Supreme Lord Shreehari. Prostrating before Maharaj seated upon His cot, Velabhai and Dosabhai offered prime seeds of gourds, cucumbers, and bitter melons harvested from their farms. Delighted, Shreehari handed the seeds to Sachchidanand Swami to sow in the Piplavadi orchards. Rudabhai presented a cotton shawl, which Maharaj graciously gave to Mulji Brahmachari for the cold winter. Karshanbhagat brought a bag of lush green pearl-millet (bajro), which Maharaj gave to Motiba with instructions to grind it daily for His sanctified rotlas.

Pleased by their pure devotion, Shreehari sat them close and revealed the immense power of the divine chant: “Devotees! In this age, the ‘Swaminarayan’ Mahamantra is so profoundly powerful that its devout chanting can neutralize even the lethal venom of a black cobra!” Velabhai engraved this divine truth into his heart (and in later years, when bitten by a deadly serpent, he was miraculously saved by chanting this Mahamantra).

When the devotees sought Maharaj’s blessings to return home, Shreehari enquired about their livelihoods. Velabhai and Dosabhai shared that they maintained vegetable farms with two pairs of sturdy oxen worth 100 rupees each. Maharaj gave a specific command: “Sell your valuable oxen immediately for cash, purchase young inexpensive calves instead, and use the surplus money to purchase and store grain!”

Rudabhai explained that he sustained his family by gathering wild grass from the fields. Shreehari advised: “Collect and store all that grass without selling it now; sell it only in Ashadh when severe drought signs manifest. Furthermore, sell whatever gold jewelry you have at home and stock up on grain!” Karshanbhagat, who owned 50 cattle, was instructed to retain only 4 milch cows for milk and sell the rest immediately to secure food grains.

Despite ridicule from skeptical villagers, all four devotees carried out Shreehari’s instructions to the letter. When the catastrophic famine of Samvat 1869 struck the land, while others suffered acute starvation, these devotees possessed abundant grain and fodder! Witnessing Shreehari’s prophetic foresight and unfailing protection, the entire region acknowledged His supreme divinity.
