Shri Narnarayan Dev Mandir Pratishtha in Ahmedabad, British Officers’ Reverence, and Reviving the Murdered Goldsmith Boy

Accompanied by a vast assembly of revered sadhus, Kathi chieftains led by Dada Khachar, and devoted parshads, Supreme Lord Shreeji Maharaj set out from Gadhpur toward Ahmedabad to perform the historic murti pratishtha of the first pinnacled temple dedicated to Shri Narnarayan Dev. Traveling via Sarangpur, Dholka, and Jetalpur, the entourage encamped beside the serene shores of Kankariya Lake in Ahmedabad, erecting royal tents.

The following morning, British provincial officers Mr. Dunlop and Mr. Heron arrived in horse-drawn carriages to pay homage to Shreehari. Mr. Heron, having previously experienced the Lord’s miraculous protection from mortal danger, held profound reverence for Him. The officers removed their hats and bowed deeply before Maharaj. Shreehari honored them with fragrant flower garlands and comfortable seating.

During their conversation, Mr. Heron inquired: “O Narayan Swami! Why did You choose to camp here in the open rather than staying at the royal Badshah Gardens?” Shreeji Maharaj smiled gently and elucidated the high moral standard of His fellowship: “Mr. Heron! Thousands of our disciples and common villagers accompany Us. Staying in private orchards without explicit consent risks damaging state property or picking fruits without permission. Respecting the property rights of others and avoiding unlawful trespass is an inviolable code of conduct for all our sadhus and devotees!” Deeply impressed by Shreehari’s unblemished moral discipline, the British administrators bowed respectfully and departed.

As it was the auspicious day of Maha Shivratri, Shreehari arranged a light feast of bananas and sugar candy for all the sadhus. Thereafter, Vedic yajnas (Mahavishnuyag) commenced at the temple under the learned guidance of scholarly Brahmins well-versed in the four Vedas.

On Sunday, the third day of the bright half of Fagan in Samvat 1878, Shreehari ascended the upper floor of the grand temple gate and consecrated the divine murtis of Shri Narnarayan Dev and Shri Radharaman Dev amidst Vedic chants and joyous aartis. After the installation, Shreehari proclaimed His divine promise: “We shall eternally reside in these sacred murtis, fulfilling the heartfelt spiritual desires of all devotees!” Maharaj personally served food five times with His own holy hands to the unending rows of sadhus and pilgrims.

During the subsequent assembly, a goldsmith (soni) devotee arrived with his young son. In the dense surge of thousands entering the main gates, the little boy’s hand slipped from his father’s grasp. Seizing the opportunity, ruthless thieves abducted the child to plunder two hundred rupees’ worth of gold ornaments adorning him. Taking the innocent boy to an abandoned wasteland west of the temple, they mercilessly choked him to death, threw his lifeless body into an empty subterranean water cistern, and fled with the jewels.

Frantic after searching in vain across the grounds, the devastated father threw himself at Shreehari’s feet, weeping inconsolably: “O Maharaj! My only son has been lost in the crowd; my entire world has collapsed!” All-knowing Shreehari comforted him: “Be at peace, devotee! Your son will be restored to you, though the gold ornaments will not return!” Maharaj summoned Parshad Bhaguji and instructed: “Bhaguji! Take torches and search the abandoned dry cisterns in the wasteland west of the mandir!”

Bhaguji discovered the child in the cistern, but found the body cold and devoid of life. Rushing back, Bhaguji reported in sorrow: “Maharaj! The child is found, but the bandits have strangled him to death!” Unperturbed, Supreme Lord Shreehari replied: “He has merely swooned; bring him before Us!” When the lifeless corpse was placed before Shreehari, Maharaj handed the child back to the father and commanded: “Wrap this child in a clean cloth and let him rest undisturbed. Do not weep or grieve; by tomorrow morning, your boy will awaken and speak to you!”

Anchored in absolute faith in Shreehari’s divine word, the goldsmith kept the covered body beside him through the night. At dawn, during the sacred Brahma-muhurta, a miraculous pulse of life surged through the boy’s limbs! He opened his eyes, stretched his arms, and called out, “Father!” completely revived and healthy!

Beholding the dead child restored to life by the boundless grace of Supreme Lord Swaminarayan, the entire city of Ahmedabad erupted in jubilant praise of His unmatched divinity.
