Shri Hari Revives a Dead Ox at Kankaria Lake in Ahmedabad through the Divine Chanting of the Swaminarayan Mahamantra

Supreme Lord Swaminarayan was gracing the historic city of Ahmedabad (Shrinagar) with His divine presence. The grand, newly-constructed temple of Shri Nara-Narayana Dev was ready for its historic idol consecration (murti-pratishtha). In celebration of this grand festival, massive arrangements were underway along the serene banks of Kankaria Lake to host a vast traditional charitable feast (choryasi) for thousands of Brahmins. Numerous white tents were pitched across the lakeside.

At that time, a large pilgrimage caravan (sangh) of Shravak Vaniks (Jain pilgrims) hailing from Khambhat was journeying towards the sacred pilgrimage shrine of Kesariyaji in Rajasthan. Finding the expansive, shaded banyan groves and refreshing waters of Kankaria Lake ideal, they unyoked their bullock carts to feed their oxen and prepare their midday meal. While the pilgrims went into the bazaar to purchase provisions, two tethered cart-oxen began violently fighting each other. In the entanglement, the thick neck-rope twisted severely around one ox’s windpipe, completely choking it to death on the spot!

The pilgrims frantically attempted to revive the animal, but it lay completely motionless and dead. The poor cart-driver, who had purchased the prized ox for seventy hard-earned silver rupees, collapsed in profound despair, weeping inconsolably: “Alas! Deprived of my ox, how shall I ever feed my starving wife and children?”

Hearing the loud lamentations echoing along the lake, the all-knowing Lord Swaminarayan inquired: “Who is weeping so bitterly?” The devotees narrated the tragic death of the ox and the plight of the impoverished driver. Meanwhile, a bystander advised the weeping driver: “Brother! In those large tents across the grove resides Bhagwan Swaminarayan; rush to His feet! If He is indeed God incarnate, He will surely breathe life back into your dead ox!”

The cart-driver raced into Shri Hari’s tent, cast himself at the Lord’s sacred lotus feet, and pleaded through tears: “O Lord! You are the savior of the fallen and the protector of the destitute! My ox worth seventy rupees has died; without my ox, my family is ruined! O Lord, show me Your divine mercy!” The compassionate Lord smiled gently: “Good man! An ox does not perish so easily! Surely the life-force still lingers within its frame; come, let Us inspect it!”

Holding His slender cane, Shri Hari walked over to the dead ox. The animal was stiff, cold, and utterly lifeless. Casting His compassionate, ambrosial glance upon the corpse, Shri Hari remarked: “Behold, its life-breath has merely ascended to its forehead; it shall stand up in a moment!” Hearing this, several skeptical onlookers whispered cynically among themselves: ‘This beast has been dead and cold for quite some time! This person cannot even distinguish between the living and the dead; why on earth do people revere Him as God?’

Reading their cynical thoughts, the omniscient Lord smiled and instructed the cart-driver: “Brother! Bend down and utter the sacred Mahamantra ‘Swaminarayan… Swaminarayan…’ five times distinctly into the ear of this ox, and it will arise immediately!” Acting instantly on the Lord’s command, the driver knelt and whispered the divine name ‘Swaminarayan… Swaminarayan…’ five times into the dead animal’s ear.

No sooner had the fifth chant concluded than an astounding miracle unfolded! A visible shiver surged through the dead beast’s frame; it twitched its ears, opened its eyes, scrambled onto its four legs, and immediately began munching on the fodder lying nearby! Beholding this undeniable resurrection, the entire Khambhat caravan and thousands of onlookers along Kankaria Lake stood frozen in absolute disbelief! Weeping with boundless gratitude, the cart-driver threw himself into prostrations at Shri Hari’s lotus feet. The doubts of the cynics vanished instantly, and the entire gathering bowed reverently, acknowledging Lord Swaminarayan as the supreme divine Parabrahman incarnate.
