Amrutba of Ahmedabad Experiences the Divine Darshan of 24 Tirthankaras in Shri Hari and Offers Palanquin Service

In the city of Ahmedabad, the magnificent pinnacled shrine of Shri Nara-Narayana Dev was completed, and Lord Swaminarayan personally graced the city for the historic idol installation festival. In the household of the city’s eminent and wealthy merchant, Nagarsheth Himasha, there served a devout Satsangi maidservant named Champa. Daily, while performing her household chores, Champa narrated the wondrous glory, divine exploits, and supreme compassion of Lord Swaminarayan to the elderly matriarch of the family, Amrutba.

Hearing these glowing accounts, the pious Jain matriarch Amrutba felt an ardent yearning to behold the Lord: “Champa! I must personally behold this divine Bhagwan Swaminarayan whom you praise with such fervent devotion!” Champa replied: “Respected Mother! Why delay an auspicious resolution? Right now, Bhagwan Swaminarayan is camped along the banks of Kankaria Lake hosting a colossal traditional feast (choryasi) for thousands of Brahmins; let us proceed there immediately!”

Amrutba summoned her attendant Lakha, ordering her ornate royal carriage and an exquisitely carved, covered palanquin (palkhi) to be readied. Amrutba and Champa arrived at Kankaria Lake. Amidst the swirling multitude of thousands, Champa dispatched word through Shri Hari’s royal mace-bearer, Kubersinh Chopdar: “The venerable mother of Nagarsheth Himasha, Amrutba, has arrived yearning for the Lord’s sacred darshan.”

Shri Hari was actively supervising the immense preparations for the feast. Upon receiving the message, the compassionate Lord immediately walked towards her carriage. Stepping down, Amrutba cast her eyes upon Shri Hari’s radiant, bewitching countenance. In a transcendent epiphany, she beheld the divine forms of all twenty-four Jain Tirthankaras luminously revealed within the singular divine form of Lord Swaminarayan! Utterly spellbound by this supernatural revelation, tears of devotional ecstasy streamed from her eyes, and she prostrated herself with folded hands.

Amrutba prayed: “O Lord! Today my eyes have achieved the ultimate fulfillment of human life! Please accept this humble offering of fifteen hundred silver rupees and sanctify this palanquin by ascending it, so that the entire assembly may behold Your glory and our carriage may be consecrated!” Yielding to her pure devotional offering, Shri Hari mounted the palanquin, granting celestial darshan to the vast gathering.

Following this divine encounter, Amrutba became an ardent follower of the Swaminarayan faith. Once, when sadhus walked through the Ratanpol lane calling out for alms, Amrutba spotted them from her balcony and dispatched a servant with a message: “Holy sadhus! From this day forth, you need never seek alms elsewhere; as long as you reside in Ahmedabad, all provisions and rations shall be delivered directly from our home!” When an orthodox relative questioned why a Jain family was feeding Swaminarayan monks, Amrutba proclaimed fearlessly: “Brother! Bhagwan Swaminarayan personally revealed Himself to me in the divine forms of the twenty-four Tirthankaras! It is only after absolute conviction that I surrendered my soul to His refuge!”
