Tundasfato Bhavishyati: The Humorous Leela of Shreehari Serving Jalebis to Sura Khachar
In the third prakaran (canto), 21st chapter of the sacred scripture ‘Shree Satsangijivan’, an amusing and affectionate divine episode between Bhagwan Swaminarayan and His intimate companion, Darbar Sura Khachar, is immortalized:
Triptatvaaccha safootkaaramashnanmridulashashkuleem | Surastaam dadatam praaha tundasfaato bhavishyati || 14 ||
During a festive banquet, Shreeji Maharaj was personally serving fresh, piping-hot jalebis to the saints and chieftains with His holy hands. Sura Khachar had eaten to absolute full capacity and was breathing heavily, panting with exhaustion while struggling to finish a single soft jalebi. Seeing his state, Shreehari playfully approached and offered another large jalebi upon his plate! Sura Khachar held out both hands in sheer panic, pleading: “O Lord! Pray spare me; if I consume another bite, my bloated belly will burst wide open (tundasfaato bhavishyati)!”
Beholding Sura Khachar’s dramatic alarm, the entire assembly erupted in joyous laughter. Smiling radiantly, Shreehari comforted him with divine wit:
Ityuktavantam tam swaamee praaha chintaa’tra naasti vai | Yatah krishnaprasaadyannamashnataam nodaram svakam || 15 ||
“O Sura Bhakta! Harbor no anxiety about your belly bursting! While partaking of the sanctified remnants (prasad) of the Supreme Lord, one must contemplate: ‘This stomach does not belong to me; it belongs to the Lord!’ And God’s belly never bursts!”
Hearing this humorous spiritual logic, Sura Khachar and the entire gathering laughed uproariously, and Sura Khachar happily relished the sweet prasad.
