Panchala: Protection of Jinabhai from Oppressive Tenants and Relishing Bitter Sorghum Rotlas

Darbar Jinabhai (also known as Manubha Bapu), the ruler of the holy pilgrimage town of Panchala, was a singularly surrendered, saintly devotee of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. In Samvat 1858, he had first welcomed Shreehari into his palace, consecrating his entire kingdom to the Lord.

Taking undue advantage of Jinabhai’s gentle, saintly disposition, turbulent Ahir tenant farmers had withheld the royal agricultural share for years. Reluctant to disturb Shreehari with worldly woes, Jinabhai endured quiet hardship, subsisting upon ancient, bitter, deteriorated sorghum (‘khori jaar’) without uttering a single complaint!

Omniscient Shreehari perceived His beloved devotee’s hidden suffering. Maharaj had Shuk Muni draft a formal epistle to British Political Agent Baker Saheb in Porbandar, detailing the obstinacy of the tenants. Maharaj endorsed the letter with His own sacred signature and dispatched it through chieftain Navalsangji.

Upon reading the letter, Baker Saheb deployed British troops to Panchala. Terrified by the armed soldiers, the panic-stricken tenants abandoned their threshing yards and fled into hiding. Spotting Shreehari walking near the fields, they fell at His lotus feet, weeping for protection: “O Maharaj! Pray deliver us from this impending catastrophe!”

Shreehari sternly reprimanded them: “You now realize the pain of your children starving, yet for years you withheld Jinabhai’s rightful grain without remorse! Because of your deceit, he was forced to consume bitter, spoiled grain, yet he never retaliated against you. Repent for your unjust conduct!” Weeping with contrition, the tenants begged forgiveness, delivered all accumulated grain into Jinabhai’s granaries, and sought spiritual refuge in Shreehari.

Foreseeing future events, Shreehari advised Jinabhai and his mother Gangaba: “A devastating famine will strike next year; sell all your livestock beforehand.” Trusting Maharaj implicitly, they sold their herds. The following year, a catastrophic drought ravaged the region, during which Shreeji Maharaj resided in Panchala for a full month, lovingly relishing rotlas made from that very ‘khori jaar’ alongside His saints and chieftains, immortalizing His devotee’s sacrifice.
