Kriparam and Sitaram of Barai
Near the historic city of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh lies the quiet village of Barai. In this village lived two biological brothers named Kriparam and Sitaram, who were devout, beloved followers of Shri Hari. Having embraced Satsang through the divine association of holy sadhus, both brothers observed the five moral vows (panch vartaman) with utmost vigilance. Profound mutual affection and unshakeable harmony bonded the two brothers.
As they advanced in age, the two brothers made a sacred pact between themselves: “Whomever among us Shriji Maharaj comes to escort to Akshardham first, that brother must accompany Shriji Maharaj to fetch the second brother, so that both of us may shed our mortal frames and enter Akshardham together.”
Sometime after exchanging this solemn pledge, the elder brother, Kriparam, developed a mild fever. Feeling physically frail, he lay resting on a cot in the veranda. At that very hour, Shriji Maharaj, accompanied by an assembly of divine muktas—some seated atop golden howdahs on magnificent elephants and others riding horses—arrived at the outskirts of Barai village.
Royal tents and pavilions were pitched at the village outskirts. Parshads fired gunshots into the air as a royal salute, and hearing the resonant echoes, the villagers rushed out in excitement. Shri Hari informed the gathering villagers, “We are traveling from Ahmedabad and proceeding toward Chhapaiya.” The villagers bowed and placed humble offerings before Him.
Just as they emerged from the tents after having darshan, they beheld a radiant, celestial golden chariot arriving from the village, driven by Shri Hari Himself, with elder brother Kriparam seated beside Him!
Beholding this, younger brother Sitaram called out in astonishment, “Elder brother! You were suffering from fever; where are you heading seated in this celestial chariot?”
Kriparam replied, “Brother! Shriji Maharaj has arrived along with all these divine muktas to escort me to Akshardham. I am departing with Him to the eternal abode.”
Hearing this, Sitaram halted the chariot and pleaded, “Brother! Do you remember our sacred promise—that whoever departs first must return to escort the other? Tell me, when will you return to take me to Akshardham?”
Elder brother Kriparam reassured him, “Brother Sitaram! Be prepared on the thirteenth day after my passing; I shall surely return accompanied by Shriji Maharaj to escort you to Akshardham! Furthermore, I have buried two thousand rupees inside the wall of our house: use one thousand rupees to offer a grand thal to Shri Radhakrishna Dev and Shriji Maharaj and feast all the devotees, and use the remaining thousand as you deem fit. Farewell now, Jai Shree Swaminarayan to all!”
Uttering these words, the celestial chariot soared into the skies and vanished. Sitaram rushed home and found the lifeless mortal body of his elder brother resting upon the cot. The villagers gathered and performed the cremation rites.
Faithful to Kriparam’s instructions, Sitaram offered one thousand rupees for thal at the mandir, utilized the remaining funds to lovingly feed the devotees, and performed the memorial rites on the twelfth day.
The very next morning—on the promised thirteenth day—Shriji Maharaj arrived in divine glory, accompanied by elder brother Kriparam, to escort younger brother Sitaram to Akshardham. Sitaram had the ground sanctified with cow dung, scattered sesame seeds, and sat peacefully upon the holy earth. Uttering ‘Jai Swaminarayan’ to all with a joyous, serene countenance, he relinquished his mortal frame and ascended to the eternal abode of Akshardham alongside Shri Hari and his elder brother.
