The Varkhado Tree of Chandrani and the Jalebi Episode in Bhuj
Shri Hari graced the village of Chandrani in Kutch and stayed for five days at the residence of two Aboti Brahmin brothers, Jethobhai and Haribhai. Every day, Maharaj went to bathe in the lake situated at the village outskirts. Between the village and the lake stood numerous memorial stones (paliya). Adjoining the eastern side of these memorial stones grew a crooked varkhado tree. Shriji Maharaj would sit astride a bending branch of that tree as though riding a horse, playfully urging it forward in endearing human-like pastimes.
Witnessing this, all the devotees laughed and inquired, “O Maharaj! What are You doing?”
Maharaj replied, “We are riding a horse; but this horse is stubborn and refuses to move!”
Recognizing the deep spiritual mystery behind Shri Hari’s playful lila, Jethobhagath and other devotees proclaimed to all, “Shriji Maharaj has personally seated Himself upon the bent branch of this varkhado tree; therefore, the soul of this tree shall now transcend the fourteen cosmic realms and attain Akshardham!” Then they prayed, “O Maharaj! Please grace the waters for bathing.” Everyone bathed in the lake and returned home. Shri Hari spent five joyous days in Chandrani, showering divine bliss upon His devotees.
From there, Maharaj proceeded to Bhujnagar and sat upon a wooden seat (paat) in the sadhus’ quarters. A large assembly of sadhus and devotees gathered before Him. Devotee Sundarjibhai asked a sincere question: “Maharaj! It seems that the spiritual liberation of us householders cannot equal that of the sadhus. For sadhus are completely devoted to the path of renunciation (nivrutti), so their salvation is beyond doubt. But we householders are engaged in worldly occupations (pravrutti), beset by thousands of distractions. How then can our liberation be equal to that of the sadhus?”
Hearing this, Shriji Maharaj gave a profound answer: “The liberation of the sadhus and that of you householders is completely equal! Consider this: when an invading army attacks Bhujnagar, the state soldiers march out to fight. At that time, the merchants and citizens of the city sustain them with food, water, ammunition, and supplies; sustained by that support, the soldiers fight valiantly. In the exact same way, the sadhus are renunciants whom you serve with food, water, clothing, and spiritual scriptures; supported by your service, they engage peacefully in meditation, bhajan, and prayers. Therefore, your liberation and that of the sadhus is entirely equal; because you serve the holy sants, and the sants worship God in peace.” Hearing this divine explanation, all the devotees were filled with immense joy.
That night, as Shriji Maharaj was lying on His side and gently rubbing His abdomen, Sundarjibhai asked, “O Maharaj! Are You feeling hungry?”
Maharaj replied, “We are indeed hungry; but the night is far advanced and everyone has gone to sleep; where can food be found at this hour?”
Sundarjibhai immediately dispatched a Brahmin, saying, “Run to the sweetmaker’s shop and bring a clay pot (matli) of sweets.” The Brahmin ran swiftly and returned with a pot filled with fresh, warm jalebis. Sundarjibhai handed the pot to Hirjibhai and said, “Serve these jalebis to Shri Hari; let us see whether you tire of serving or I tire of ordering!”
Hirjibhai served jalebis onto a plate, and Maharaj began eating with delight. In between, Maharaj playfully asked, “How many jalebis are left?” Hirjibhai laughed and teased, “O Maharaj! You have barely eaten; the entire pot is full!” and signaled to Sundarjibhai, “He is finishing them all!” Sundarjibhai promptly ordered a second pot of jalebis. Maharaj laughed, stretched out on the seat, chuckled, and looked at the pot. Hirjibhai urged, “If any are left over, my reputation will suffer!” Maharaj kept laughing and eating.
Soon Hirjibhai remarked, “This pot is almost empty as well; you will not be able to satisfy His divine appetite!” A third pot of jalebis was summoned. Even though Maharaj gestured to stop, the third pot was brought, from which Maharaj relished half. The remaining prasad was distributed among all the sadhus and devotees. Shriji Maharaj washed His hands, rinsed His mouth, and retired for sleep.
